Some times my colonies grow rapidly but colonists in other places die off instead of growing (I'm assuming because of the climate). How can I tell whats going to make a good colony or which ones will die of rancid diseases?

You just tend to work it out, which places are good and which aren't. I haven't seen any pre-colonisation indicator either.

Generally, islands (especially small ones) will always start growing well straight-off, as will provinces in the Argentina/Chile region and most of North America (and Australia too). Other provinces vary.

I would demur slightly on the view of avoiding Africa. Nouakchott (because of an exceptionally large number of friendly natives and a decent value trade good) is a reasonable candidate.

Actually, the best way of finding out where to colonise is to do it and see what happens. If memory serves, the worst place to try colonising in Africa is the area between Congo and Nigeria.

Charles II is also correct about the location penalty being eliminated with city status. Again, memory is hopefully serving me well when I say that this effect is stepped every 1000 people up to 5000, so that you could just pump sufficient colonists in until the population growth has "broken even", so to speak.

I believe it also depends on your own country's climate matched against that of the colony's - I didn't find any problem getting SE Asian colonies to grow when I was playing as Mataram. On the other hand, I might not have had much success in Finnmark...

It's continent IIRC. If your capital is on the same continent as the colonial city you won't get any -location in population growth, unless your capital is in Europe.

- Within the same continent there are no location penalties (eg. asian countries get not penalties in asia).

- Countries with capitals in tropical locations (don't know where this is clearly defined, maybe the colonisation FAQ?) get reduced penalties in tropical locations, eg. Northern South America, Indonesia, Africa?

- Location penalties disappear after 5000, so even africa with it's -12 penalty is ok if you colonise the correct places. I think the african penalties are supposed to reflect the fact that europeans couldn't settle in africa until much later.

EDIT: Population penalties also gradually decrease .. so if you get 3-4k from natives it should be possible to positive growth anyway.

Mozambique and Angola, both Portuguese colonies have low hostility natives that will push the total population to 5k+ after city completion. Some of the Indian places also have the same deal, eg. Goa.

The best places to avoid location penalty are North America, the Caribbean islands, southern South America (below brazil), australia.

Choose the more valuable provinces first though, ie. tax income & good produced, since population doesn't make that much difference .. you only get slightly increased production income.

Once a colony hits population 1000, it won't go under 1000. So, you're safe, your colonial city won't disappear, that's the principal.

So, colonize everywhere, you can tough it out. ;)

The location penalty steps down at 2001, 2501, 3501 and 5001.

In addition to the above, I would only add that tropical islands with more than one province will have location penalties while islands with only one province have no location penalties. I would still raise Jakarta and Colombo to city status though.
