Some fifty years ago, the Sons of Ragnar Lodbrok ravaged the Christian Kingdom of Northumbria, murdering the monks of Lindisfarne and Melrose, desecrating the holy sites and crushing all opposition, culminating in the murder of Ælla by the blood-eagle method and thus avenging their father, thrown aged 94 by the Northumbrian king into a pit of snakes.

Now, after decades of careful planning, sycophancy and light treading, Ælla's grandson Cyneric the Fat has restored the throne, throwing off the shackles of Norse rule and smashing Viking armies north and south of the border. Once-mighty Jorvik is reduced to a paltry three counties divided across the British Isles, and a teenage king, Dag, sits atop the throne. The cowardly boy has even converted to Catholicism after hearing whispers of a holy war to seize the rich lands around York from him. Meanwhile, the wily successor to Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye, Guðfrið the Hunter, has been humbled, forced to concede the mainland in the face of the growing power of Alba and Nothumbria and to retreat to the cold north-western islands where he plots his next move.

The momentum is very much with the Christian Anglo-Saxons of Northumbria. My question is, what should I do next? I'm going to consolidate a bit and ideally get a bit richer, but I never really expected to survive the invasion of the Great Heathen Army, let alone restore the kingdom in only two generations...

Ally with Alba and secure your northern border. Try to play inheritance game with Mercia or Wessex and ally one of them as well. Wreck Welsh, become king of Wales. Inherit either Mercia or Wessex and go for the last big English realm through war or inheritance. Unite everything under Crown of England. Vassalize York and Eastern England, beat Brittany, vassalize Cornwall. Then Isle of Man and Ireland, then remaining islands. No pagans should be left on British soil.

Leave no Norseman standing on English soil! Jorvik must be crushed, for York is your rightful territory. Welsh think they can take English land? Send them running back to their hills.

After that, it's the marriage game with Mercia and Wessex.

This is my thinking - even though Jorvik might be Catholic for now, you can never trust those snakey pagans. If York happens to be the most prosperous county in the North, well, that's a lucky coincidence. And of course whipping the Welsh into place is a time-honoured Saxon tradition.

I hear there are exotic teas in India. As an Englishman you know your duty.

Mmmm. Perhaps this is a slightly longer term goal. Though in all seriousness, St Cuthbert's pectoral cross was made with fragments of cowrie shells, which are most commonly found in India and North Africa. Maybe the Northumbria to India link isn't so far-fetched after all?

If you're playing Ironman, there is an achievement for being Emperor of Brittania with an Indian religion.
