I really loved Nexus. Though sometimes you simply had to reload the whole mission because you didn't have the right modules on. That was a bit annoying.

A cinematic can literally be as pretty as you like. Rendering in-game, however, is subject to performance constraints, physics obstacles, engine limitations and occasional random bugs. SOTS 2 has no cinematics, so we have not seen what Kerberos could produce if they were freed from those constraints, and so cannot compare it to another game's cinematics.

in-engine to in-engine is fine, but comparing to a cinematic is like blasting a game because it doesn't look as good as Avatar - it's a meaningless comparison. may as well say "it's not as pretty as looking at Jupiter through a telescope", it's as relevant as a measure of the game.

It's also 4x gamers - we're a different market segment to most games customers, slightly older, a little more patient, a little less full of locusts and racism.

I loved the game, but the it had issues.
Mainly it became repetative after the first playthru. Same missions, same battles always. If they'd made a good 4x game with THAT battle system however... well that's what they wanted to do, but never happened. It's original name was Imperium Galactica 3, and I think they ran out of money and dropped the 4X concept. Too bad.

Complexity ? This must be the most simplified 4X game ever. Where's the trade ? Why there are so few possibilities to tweak my "empire" ? You can "overharvest" or you can build a station. Is that really it ?

Press the pie chart at the top of the UI? Leets you play around with taxes, immigration, how much you wanna spend on coolonization, research or secuirty, intel, etc etc etc etc.

Theres supposed to be trade routes and trade agrements with other empires and whatnot, but im not sure if its working yet. You can make colonize yourself or leet your civs do it (less control, but cheaper).

From the actions you make your empire will turn to different types of goverment that gives different bonuses (not sure if its working yet either, i seem to be stuck in the middle).

And theres aloot more, i havent even scratched the surface.

Try the game before you judge it, it has aloot of potential once they fix all the bugs and include all the features.

Ohh, and about graphics. The difference is the details, Sots 2 is the most detailed game i have ever seen.

5 years ago it was mentionned as tech demo. If you look at the actual gameplay in Nexus I which was already exceptional (sample gameplay), it seems plausible that it is indeed done using the engine.

PS: i don't care so much about graphics...i am still happy playing MOO1 with the way it looks.

All they did that they made footage with nexus 1's engine and enchanted it using some video editing program.

Go try out the first game since you get a key for free. It has an amazing amount of content and replayability and will help you with the basic mechanics of the new game as well as give make you understand the amazing potential the new title has. Right now it is very much infinished which is unfortunate but there is no other game out there quite like it. If the vision of the developers is fully realized it will be mindblowingly amazing with real simulated tactical combat that has amazing variability and truly cinematic visuals.

Just out of interest on the Nexus debate - has anyone compared the complexity of the angelwing model with even a Liir cruiser? et alone dreadnaught or Leviathon - with constantly moving parts, Or Tarka ships with their multiple armour plates? The models in Nexus were much simpler allowing more texture effects - and its the same of the tech demo from when I've watched it.

And don't get me wrong I love Nexus, the Jupiter incident - I still boot it up about once a year to run through the campaign :)

I humbly apologise. I've got some gouda as a peace offering?

I'm not much into cheese, sadly. Always leaves a nasty aftertaste. Are you, by any chance, from that flat piece of Europe that only produces Gouda and tulips - and weed? (I know a few people from Germany, and boy do they have a lot of... opinions about the Dutch!)

Looking at Nexus now, and having played it (and enjoyed it quite a bit) back when it came out, MOST of it being pretty came from high resolution textures, not complex models. I enjoy the SotS graphics style, though I do wish my ships would have my "ship colour" and not my "empire colour." I find it a bit weird that the thing labeled ship colour only effects a few lines or highlights. o_O

All of that aside, Nexus was an AMAZINGLY pretty game for it's time. Much of that came from low complexity models with smart use of textures and video tricks. Asteroids were barely more than blocky things, and planets weren't anything but pretty pictures in the background. None of this is to say that I don't like the graphics of that game, but just to point out that we're dealing with something very different. In SotS 2 you're dealing with much more complex models, with actual turrets on each hardpoint instead of a magical texture that shoots lasers. Also, almost everything in Nexus was a laser, and none of the models had any locational damage visible, no hardpoints to blow off or sections to destroy.

Basically, it's not worth comparing the two, is my point. They might both be in space, but that doesn't mean they're the same and should be compared.

Just my thought.

All of that aside, back to the op, the game isn't in a great state currently. I've played MANY hours just working to learn the interface and get myself ready for when it IS great. I haven't been able to fight any meaningful combats (I don't like going to war for no reason), and I haven't seen even a single random encounter. I know all of that will come along, and I have high hopes for the game. Let's see how the Monday patch fixes things!

in 2005, it was called a tech demo...something else?

Yes, I belive the devs wouldn't need 400.000 euros from the fans to begin development if they would have a working engine.

And by the way if the official webpage is not proof enough for you, then I really can't give you anything else. If it was a working tech demo they would call it that.
