My question is:
Is it decided, before I send out settlers, where CoT's are going to pop up? In three games a row CoT's have popped up in Table, The Falklands and Macquaire. That's when I had like 100-150 other colonies. Manhattan was the province two of the times. And, if it's decided, you should be able to edit it, right?

The one in Manhattan is there when you arrive.
I did not get a CoT in Table, I got one in Mauritius.
It maybe random, or it may depend on which country you play.
I am playing Spain 1.04 GC

I mean, these provinces all got CoT's in both EU1 and EU2. I'm playing without the patch. Wonder why. Ahh, I it's best to download it then.

If you as an example play as Hungary in the GC and you have adjusted the files so that you have 25 as landtech level or something like that you should get a Cot .Ofcourse this is cheating so i recomend that you don´t do it.:)

What do you mean about GC? I can't find that file were i can adjust those things that you are telling about.

For that matter, do ROTW countries even get new CoTs? I'm playing China right now, and after picking "expansive" for the Zhenge He event I'm doing very well in the colonization game -- Siberia, the west coast of the US, Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines, some of India -- and I haven't got a randomly generated one by 1600. Guangzhou got one, but that was a scripted event

I eventually just gave in and conquered Malacca and Kansai :D

Cheers,

I think somewhere each province has a certain likelihood to generate a COT. I'm not entirely sure where that is located.

As for countries I think you're much more likely to get a new COT if you don't currently have one. If you're Spain most of your trade is probably going to Andalusia. But if you're an ahistoric Danish colonizer your trade is going to other country's COTs, so you're more likely to get your own.

Your DP settings also make a difference (I think).

But that being said Paradox has never clearly stated what the conditions for new COTs are.

Think you're right. I just played EU2 as portugal. After 50+ colonies I hadn't one single new CoT. Almost everything went to the CoT in Tago. But playing as a small country I got new CoTs.

I'm interested in this as well. Just finished a GC as Portugal and I only got 2 new COTs, one in Ciskei and one in Buru. I didn't take over any other ones either. I really expected to get one in South America. At the end, Tago and Buru were both well over 1500. Meanwhile, the Dutch get one in Valparaiso and one in Nueltin to go along with Flandern and Holland. The value of all 4 COTs probably added up to 500. I thought that DP settings might make a difference so I went max free trade and max Plutocracy. Didn't seem to matter.

I think you're more likely to have the CoT pop up in your territory (rather than someone else's) if your trade tech is higher than theirs. (This was true in EU1.) However, it still won't pop up until there is enough need for a CoT in that region... this will only affect where it pops up.

For instance, let's say England has trade tech 5 and owns half of the Indonesia area, while the Dutch have trade tech 7 and own the other half. Chances are the CoT will pop up in a Dutch province.

Certain patterns of colonization seem to produce CoTs more than others. If you colonize the coasts of a continent, it may be that no particular province ever gets past the threshold necessary to become a CoT. But that's just an educated guess.

Trade tech changes the likelihood of a CoT emerging, I think, which is why RoTW nations don't typically get them.

My CoTs

Playing as England on 1.04/eep 1.00b in GC year 1709.

CoTs:

"Standard" CoTs owned by English
1. Anglia (event created)
2. Isle de France
3. Flandern
4. Manhattan
5. Zapotec (or whatever that Mexico City one is)

Popup CoTs
1. Table (only English Colony on Continent)
2. Timor (popped up while a level 4 colony and under native control and was my only colony in oceana)

So, I don't think the number of CoTs you own makes a difference. Though I'm still waiting for my CoTs in Australia and Sacremento (where I've had ones pop up in other campaigns, and perhaps the Falklands, and Jaffa). But in general, I think you can always count on the Table CoT, and to a lesser degree oone somewhere in indonesia, either Timor or Buru.

Question(s): How are the boundaries of ROTW COT's determined? If you found a colony or trading post it automatically belongs to your centre of trade right? Assuming the colony stays in your hands, is it permanently in your centre of trade? What happens when the colony grows beyond 700 and becomes a city? Does it stay in your centre of trade or does it join the closest one geographically?

You'll excuse my ignorance here - I've been playing central/eastern European nations and haven't done much in the way of colonisation. I've just colonised the Cape Verde islands as the Turks though, and I'm wondering what's in the future for the colony.

Far off colonies & TPs will trade with your CoTs if you have a high mercantilism or a trade tech lead over the owner of local CoT.

In my current game as Russia, I have a bunch of colonies in NA. They were still trading thru Novgorod rather than Manhatten, till a new CoT sprang up in my colony in San Bernardino.

BTW, in addition to Novgorod, I own the CoT in Astrakhan, but not the one in Kurland.

I wish I knew what the conditions are. :( In the GC I'm playing now (as Navarra), CoTs keep popping up in my neighbors' colonies, but not mine. Even though I've colonised Australia, almost all of North America, and large portions of India, Southern/SE Africa and northern South America, I haven't had a single CoT appear for me. One appeared for Spain in Baja (their one remaining North American province {and which later revolted to me :)}), and one for England in their SINGLE east-African colony, a few provinces north of Inhambane (I've got cities all down the coast). Even one for France in the Canadian arctic. But me, I've had to work for mine.

God, I'm a whiney bitch of a man tonight. :p
