Hello.

I control the entire Mediteranean coast - British Gibraltar and all of Egypt. Suddenly, there are dozens of US subs sinking my convoys - anyone know how they got in? I don't think they were there all along, I chased the RN out in 1940 and no convoy's been sunk in over 18 months, now - BOOM! all the time, and because Vichy France is so lame, I have to run oil to Northwest Africa or my tanks don't have anythig to drink.

Thanks,

Chris

If you cycle through the hints given when you start the game (unless you disable them like most of us do) it lists the two areas that subs can pass where surface ships can not. The Straits of Gibraltar is one I can’t remember the other. The Panama Canal was not one of the two.

UM that's wrong the only direction the Italians went is staright down to the bottom of the sea. :D
No, they didn't.

Quote from SubNet Italia:

In the first phase of the war the Italian submarines departed La Spezia (with the dangerous crossing of Strait of Gibraltar) for Atlantic patrol [...]

Also these books, for mentions of Italian submarines in the Atlantic (And information about the Regia Marina during WWII in general.).:
The Italian Navy in World War II, by James J. Sadkovich.
Frogmen: First Battles, by William Schofield and P.J. Carisella.

Edit: Also the site RegiaMarina.net, click 'Database' ---> 'Sinking' ---> 'By Areas of Operation' ---> 'Atlantic Ocean'.

They made it through, after surviving an EXTREMELY harrowing disaster. They were sunk by a British air raid at La Spezzia immediately after mooring. At least, this is what happened in the movie. Never read the book, though.

That´s not right. In the movie the sub was heavy damaged by an britisg destroyer and sunk. After a few hours of repairing they made it back to the surface and return to La Rochelle. They didn´t make it through the Strait of Gibraltar. In La Rochelle they were destroyed by an air attack.

In film, miniseries and, most importantly, book, they made it back to France and were sunk in harbour.

Don't ignore Das Boot - superb book. Also, please bear in mind that Donitz was ordered to move U-Boats from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean by Hitler, to support the Italians. Against his protests, I would add. So it's entirely historical.

Steve.

You're right. Hadn't seen it in several years, and watched it again yesterday because this thread gave me the itch to see it again. I came here to correct myself, but you beat me to it. Great WWII flick!!!
