I bought mine at an EB in Brampton after like a week of calling around, EB was the only place that I called that knew what Victoria was, and they only knew it because it was in the computer. The clerks had never even heard of it until they checked the database.

As mentioned before, Victorias low sales have to be in part to availability. The copy of Victoria that I bought was the ONLY copy that the store recieved for the games opening launch.

If a hardcore fan such as myself had to search a week for it, then buy the only copy in town, (ok there might have been 1 or 2 copies somewhere else eventually) imagine the odds of someone who is not familiar with paradox buying it.

Even when I bought Hearts of Iron, I only heard of it through grognard war game sites.

It hasn't been released over here yet, of course.

I've bought it from amazon in Germany. I've seen it in a big retail shop ("Saturn") as well.

Got mine at EB Games a few weeks ago. Didn't really look for it before that (too busy with EU2 and HoI).

It took me two or three days of searching two or three stores to get it. I was especially pissed when GameStop said it would be in the next day and then when I stopped by the next day on my way home they said their shipment hadn't yet arrived that day. I got it at EB the next day.

Johnny Canuck:

You forgot to add the choice: pre-ordered at a store (EB) only to have them jerk you around for 2 weeks until they finally filled all their web orders and bothered shipping to their retail outlets.

You missed an option. I had to ASK my favourite on-line shop. I told them who the developer was (Paradox), who the publisher was (Strategy First) and they went looking and got me a copy. I've had to do this quite a lot with Strategy First games. Trying to buy Jagged Alliance 2 Gold Pack, another SF game, proved impossible.

I am totally underwhelmed by Strategy First. They have a local distributor here in Australia, just don't expect them to carry any SF titles though. (Although I did notice Victoria for sale on their web site recently)

Boy, I guess I was lucky. Fry's Electronics is a big electronics chain in the Western U.S. They always have a large stock of Strategy games. The one nearest me in Sunnyvale, CA is still carrying all Paradox games: Vicky, HOI, EU2. They even have a few copies of the original EU. (At least they were a few weeks ago.)

Main site is www.frys.com

Store locations are at

http://www.frys-electronics-ads.com/frys-store-location.htm

Their customer service in the stores isn't good, but at least it's not abysmal like Comp USA.

Cheers,

Stilicho

Imo. there is only one way to interprete the results of this poll:

Ask exactly the same participants how they usually buy games of other producers (to compare with foreign games) or how they bought earlier paradox games (to measure any corporate progress).

1. same participants : Participants of this poll are more likely 'hardcore addicts' tending to preorder or desperately seek for a game than victoria players who didn't participate. Comparing polls of other players about other games would make comparison even more difficult.
Some participants voting for 'preorder' might have preordered all of their previous games (because they're used to) , or some who bought online did so for the first time because they couldn't find the game anywhere in the shelves.

2. games of other producers : this comparison would indicate if availability of victoria was better or worse than games of foreign producers

3. earlier paradox games: Did the (inter-)national availability of paradox improve over time ?

It would have been helpful if this poll was extended at the beginning in order to allow any meaningful comparison.

-------------
ps: i voted 'Ordered it Online' - it was the 1st time i did so although I'm absolutely opposed ordering software online

He also forgot the choice "Bought on an online store". When I bought it, I didn't bother to look at a store outlet at all. When I voted, I voted for preorder (even though it wasn't) because that was the closest to the truth.

Ordered it from the Russian on-line store ozon.ru. My only way to buy software here in Japan (amazon does not ship games to Japan).

Usually takes over a month to arrive (as did HOI, Legion, EU2) but Vicky and Vikings - or whatever the English name of it is - arrived super fast.

This thread shows that there is very obvious problem in the distribution chain. I think that this factor, much more than any other, played the most important part in Victoria's disappointing sales. And of course, many of still remember the debacle surrounding Victoria not being shipped when it was supposed to and all of the controversy around that. There were quite a few angry folks at that time.

It all comes down to this, it's really quite a simple truism of economics. You just can't buy something if you can't find it anywhere.

I can not agree, suppose Victoria would be everywhere and the forum dwellers - knowing and thrusting Paradox approach, buy this game regardless of reviews,

suppose a "new or vanilla" customer sees a box of Victoria, he might be overwhelmed by the box but most customers will look it up in a game magazine or online reviews, I don't think they'll visit this forum because were are already to much into details,

then they find a bad score for a new product in many sites "complex with too much micromanagement", they'll never buy it!

sorry to say but having good reviews - or in other words = "accepting a new to failry new concept" is a needed prerequisite,

the only issue is who's judging on these new concepts? Lara croft and C&C accolites?

I ordered it through the Nobilis web store (Nobilis is Vicky's French distributor). However, not any copies of Vicky were available in the main French gaming shops such as Virgin or the FNAC ... even if HOI and EU2 were still displayed in these stores.

Is doh-roh wahtt - apparently a strange and obtrusive smelling ethiopian national dish - an international failure because it's eaten nowhere outside central-ethiopian provinces ?
How shall we know, if the world didn't even have the chance to taste it ?

I'm glad paradox is treating different causes separately; apart from the complicity (handeled in this separate poll) there are actually more issues involved such the attraction of the graphical interface, sexyness of the victorian era etc.
