Where did the name come from?

This might sound like a silly question, but where did the name Hearts of Iron come from? Is it an amalgamation of "Purple Heart" and "Iron Cross"? When I think WWII, I think more steel than iron. Iron is associated more with WWI, or even earlier, in my mind. It does sound poetic though.

Just a thought, but "Hearts of Steel" would be close to the old WWII wargame "Clash of Steel."

I was asking myself the same question...HoI sounds like the title of an epic war novel or something...It is nice and appealing ofcourse,but i don't know whether it is easily related to the game's concept.I believe an explanation on behalf of Paradox is needed.

hearts of iron sounds like a modern war game.(not totaly but more modern then say a 10th century war game)
hoi is also a cool abbv up there with eu and civ and uo. simple and memorable.

Whenever I see HoI abbreviated, I think of the term Hoi Polloi, which I believe is Greek and roughly translated 'the masses.'

Please correct me if I am wrong. I know really only English, Cosentino, Toscano, and a little bit of Castillano.

i dunno, i think of 'iron' when i think of both world wars, really. steel is refined, polished, enduring... iron on the other hand is unrefined, brutal, expedient - just the qualities to describe the 'hearts' of people who'd desire war in the first place, i guess. it must be my poetic side taking over; i can just hear the sound of twisting scrap metal, mortars, and tanks during the battle of the bulge.

angele, that's how it's pronounced today; in ancient greek it took 'daseia', so the 'h' is required and it was pronouned ho-i pol-lo-i, just like it looks i know, slightly ot, but what the hey...

I know,i have good knowledge of the attic dialect .You are right about the daseia in doric dialects,but it would confuse our latin speaking friends(they would spell it ),so i left it out on purpose.

who knows? if i said that someone had a heart of iron, i'd be saying that the person lost his humanity - like the people who desire war to right all their wrongs - maybe it's also a play on the allies' "steely" resolve to end it...

Christ, all we've got left to talk about are these really myopic issues.

Where did the name 'Battlefield 1942' come from? Or 'Sudden Strike'? Or 'Day of Defeat'?
