I started career mode not too long ago... would really like to keep my pirate faction rep up but I can't seem to find any missions offered by the pirate faction! Only missions against them. I'm visiting systems that have black markets, where the pirate faction is flagged as active, and that have the "pirate presence" tag, but not a single mission yet.

Anything special I have to do to find them? Or am I just unlucky so far?

Look for half-skull, one skull areas, also Arano territory usually has some. I recommend increasing the contract renewal rate and max contracts in the simconstants file.

Yeah I'm still early game so easy planets are where I'm looking. Generally creeping "east" toward Arano space though.

Are there any system tags or attributes that make pirate faction missions more likely? Is it just whether or not the faction is marked active when you view the system on the starmap?

Go the map. Click a system. Look to "Active Factions" in the lower left. Ignore Comstar and the Aurigan Directorate as there are no missions for these two. Otherwise missions can show for any active faction. Pirates are all over the place. Their missions seem to be less common but you can get missions for them at any difficulty. The best systems probably have only 2-3 factions and one of them is pirates. I'm not sure but they seem to offer better salvage than most.
