Playing as Zuul, how can I abduct slaves?

What I already tried, I sent out a fleet of ships on a strike mission, targeting an independent colony. The ships had several of those Zuul disc-shaped assault shuttles with them. According to the help text, they're supposed to be able to hold 50 million slaves each in cold storage. Anyway, I got close to the colony, released all of the discs, they landed and returned to the ships, after which I retreated from the planet's firing range (I didn't order the fleet to retreat the system, I moved them further away from the planet). The fleet warped back to their starting location, but my colonies at that system didn't get any new slaves. Do the slaves get distributed evenly between all of my colonies? I haven't tried wraith abductors yet, do they work better?

Edit: Oh, someone else already posted about this issue. Sorry. http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?604035-Problems-with-Zuul
