There are some events/research that give them to me, but it seems that the overwhelming majority of the time I don't have enough of them. How can I get them?

I'm looking at the factory list that came with the game, and it has "Machine Parts Factory" in the Heavy Industry column, but I've never seen one of those on the list of factories that I can build.

Oh, right, first thread ha ha ha hilarious welcome to the forum

You need industry invention 511 (Precision Work) to trigger before you can build machine parts factories. In order to get this invention, you need to research industry tech 5103 (Interchangeable Parts), which in turn requires a few other industry techs to be researched, including 5003 (High & Low Pressure Steam Engines). Hope that helps.

Okay, thanks.

Here's another question: I recently figured out how to conduct diplomatic exchanges (I forget what they're called, but you know, I'll give you this tech in exchange for that one), but after I did two of them, the button appears to have vaporized. It's not greyed out, it's not even there at all.

Is there a limit to the number of exchanges I can do?

Hmm, okay, thank you.

How do I get goods into my stockpile? I uncheck the "Have the computer manage trade for this good" box, and switch it from "sell" to "buy" (if applicable), and then drag the slider over a bit (I'm not sure what the slider actually means, so I just put it somewhere along the line. I've experimented a little, but I couldn't figure it out). So anyway, I have it like that, but no goods(for instance, machine parts or iron) are actually added to my stockpile. How do I make that happen?

Hmm, okay, is there a set way to make your nation civilized? Or is it just a set of criteria that your nation must fit? If it is, what are those criteria?

When you become a Great Power you also become civilized and even if you lose the status of Great Power you remain civilized.

I thought that was removed in 1.02? Or does it still work this way?

The amount is the limit of which to start selling or buying.

F.x. if you have 50 steel units in stockpile, and the slider is set to sell >50, it means that you will start selling steel as soon as the stockpile is above 50. if you the press the sell/buy button, you will now always buy steel as soon as the stockpile gets below 50 units.

Moving the slider just changes the limit of when to buy or sell. Remember to always press the 'Confirm Trade' after making changes, as it won't take effect until you do.

For iron (in your question above), you just change the option to Buy and set how many iron units you always want in stock. My suggestion is to set it to 15 units, as it will cover your production needs as well as at least ten units are needed for building factories.

You ca do the same with machine parts, furniture, paper and regular clotes. But don't be surprised if you can't get these items at the start of the game (unless you can make them yourself).

Hmm...I've researched Interchangeable Parts, but ~10 yrs later, Precision Work still hasn't fired. Do I need another tech to get that invention or something?

It might depend on when you research Interchangeable Parts. The start date for the Precision Work invention is Jan. 1st, 1850, which means it is highly unlikely that the invention will trigger before then.

Well yes. Obviously you need Diplomatic points to even bother. If you want to trade for tech you'll also need Research Points which you get with high literacy/education slider. You use these whenever you research a tech yourself and whenever you trade for them.. if you trade them all away you can do neither until you catch up with yourself.

Becoming a great power no longer gives one Civilized status.. not sure anybodies worked out exactly how to pull that off? Maybe I'm wrong?

My question.. has anybody tried the 1860s start? If it's the early game and lack of Machine parts bugging people perhaps they should give this a shot. I'd presume a few countries start with the tech and god willing might even build a factory or two...

I don't think inventions fire if you have negitive prestiege.

If you want machine parts early you can try setting it to buy<1000, that way the UK will see there is a big demand for them and may build more. Even if they don't you should buy up any spare that may be floating around. However, countries buy good in order of prestiege so a minor will not be able to buy rare goods.
