After looking at the tech 'tree' I am a bit confused. Ok, I can buy that countries are limited to a few generic tanks models; even if given 50 to choose from I'd pick only 2-3 anyways. I can (barely) even buy the same stance when it comes to aircraft.

But... ships? We are not getting any unique units in HOI? Just a bunch of model 1 cruisers, model 2 cruiser, etc etc etc?...

I remember an early screenie showing an option to construct Bismarck (and not "model 2 battleship") but the tech FAQ threads seem to negate that now?

I want my S-400 subs... I want my Bismarck, a ship that could outrun anything that could outgun it and outgun anything that could outrun it...

(Japanese submarines with 2-3 aircraft attached; no analog in the world, AFAIK)

I think that screenie was for the 1939 scenario so it was the Bismarck under construction. Talking about semi wierd subs I'd like to have seen the Surcouf (French sub armed with 2x8" guns, 14 torp tubes and 1 Lt a/c) as a merchant raider:)

I am under the impression that you can also name ships as well. At least we better be able to :D. If not, the first Battleship that comes out of Germany's ship yards should be named Scharnhorst not Bismarck. A little disheartning is that the starting Naval techs for Germany do not let you lay down a "improved Battleship" right at the start and the Bismarck in my opnion would have to qualify as an improved battleship. IRL she was laid down in 1936. Hopefully it will not require to much research and still be able to start construction in late 1936. :D I would be even more upset if I planed on playing as the French because the Richelieu class which was laid down in 1935 was anything but a basic battlship.

Yay! It also seems Germany is missing it's two very old and obsolete Battleships. And I guess the Pocket battleships have been grouped in with the other CA's. This kind of makes Germany starting off with only basic crusiers seem a little silly to me. The Deutschland Class was floating around in 1936 with 283mm guns which put it far above the 200+ mm gun tech which Germany has for some reason not yet researched in the Game. The Hipper class was also laid down in 1936 with 200mm guns and for all intents and purposes was not a basic cruiser. I think I will need to do some editing to the starting techs before I play my first game :D

I'm sure that an improved/alternative GC mod group will be forming within hours of the game hitting the shelves :)

Why build the Bismark? Look what it did for Germany.

What you really want is a fleet of subs. Let's see what your rubber does when its on the bottom of the see, Limeys! :D

It's worth mentioning that my FAQ refers to "unit types" not the actual units. As MacGregor says, you can name a unit you have created anything you want. That unit is of some unit type. Paradox could have (and probably still could) created names for each model of everything. For example, the "XYZ Class" of destroyer. I think you will be able to add class names like that into the game. I'm sure somebody will experiment.

Adding class names would be really cool :D My posts were trying to make the point that it is a little silly for Germany to have ships already at sea that are opereating with techs that the game says Germany has not yet researched. I know there is probably a play balance issue behind it, but I think I will change it none the less.

Sucks.

That is pretty much why I plan on editing the game to let Germany start with Improved BB tech. It would not be the Bismarck class but for all intents and purposes would give the Germans the ability to lay down a ship in 1936 (as they did IRL)that could out run and out gun the Brits. At least for a while that is. It would also make sence because if for some reason I want to put more research into ship design I can and get the Advanced BB which is more or less an H-class. The same goes with cruisers. I wish there was a distinction between Heavy and light cruisers but since there is not, I think I will give Germany the ability to build improved cruisers as well since the Pocket BB's were definitely had larger than 200mm guns and the Hipper class was also under construction in 36. I will need to take a look at the rest of the Majors starting Naval techs to make sure they are not re-inventing the wheel as well :D

That is exactly what I want to do also, for some reason I have thing crazy fascination with the Bismark and the HClass. :p Although I will probably not get a mod to do what you describe, unless of course it is a really good one that manages to make sure the naval race does not lose the gameplay balance.

Could someone tell me if this scenario is possible. I know the tech lists are up, but I really can't understand them:eek:
1)Germany takes Czechoslovakia, shares Poland with the Soviets, and tries to get eat up the East together with Italy, including Romania.
2)USSR is never attacked and only defensive action is taken if they attack, including superb defense fighters to counter their bombers.
3)Germany focuses on Marines and Transports along with longrange fighters. for the battle fleet the focus is on battleships and cruisers, using long range naval fighters for back up.
4)France is taken- assume I am very experienced by that time and can take make Paris fall with much weaker forces. Its just AI after all;)
5)I attack UK and take it. What are conditions for UK to capitulate?
6)The rest of the game I focus on keeping Soviets and US in bay.
Can I give Japan tank tech and try to get them to atatck from the East?
Can I get carrier techs from Japan?
7)Ultimate goal is to outbuild US navy together with Japan, getting nice things like up to the nuclear tech battleships and carriers, while keeping the soviets at bay.

Is this remotely possible?

Why don't you give Germany a few advanced naval units but not the tech, so that they don't instantly overrun the British?

Im thinking since we can name any unit we want. Is expierence part of the game? So we could have elite US Army Rangers or Hell ya, Russia Siberan gaurds :D

Also Im wondering if your tech tree advances to say, level 3 Cruisers. can you still build low level older ships? I mean...that would be cool

I got so many freakin questions.
