So in my first CKII game I played as Ireland based on what Ive read in the forums with goal of uniting Ireland. Throughout most of the game Ive been minding my own business and Ive been successful in becoming the King of Ireland and Scotland, which Im pretty happy with. The year is now 1367 and I noticed a few years back that the HRE owns most of Europe and major Kingdoms such as England and France are nowhere to be seen. Since I focused mostly on myself, trying to jump through the hoops of a first playthrough, I didnt really notice why this happened.

I dont expect this is normal and I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience. At this point in the game, Im focusing on picking small kingdoms on the edge of the HRE because thats all I can do.

Cheers

They are still there, it's just that they have been taken over by the HRE. It's quite possible that England and France as Kingdoms still exist, just within the HRE, so they have become vassals of the Kaiser, therefore they show up on the map as part of the HRE. If you click on the HRE crown, you should see the various kingdom titles, such as Kingdom of Bavaria and Kingdom of Saxony, and indeed the Kings of these rulers are still there, and you can click their Coats of Arms on the map and they still rule their kingdoms...just for the Kaiser ha!

Its good idea to observe what happens all around the map. There is interesting things going on and if you don't check the other parts of the map time to time you will miss out of the interesting stories.

I'd say it's more than a good idea, I'd say it's a massive part of the game! I spend most of my time playing just watching the various rulers and countries progress and fall through the centuries. Sometimes taking a vested interest in rulers from distant lands and trying to shape their kingdoms. I feel bad for people who purely focus on their kingdom, they are massively missing out! :O

Hell, for a lot of dynasties and countries it's vital that you keep an eye on other dynasties and countries. I'm playing as a Welsh Queen at the moment, so it's been vital that I monitor England and make sure the rulers like me, and, in the case of an English Civil War, that I get involved and back the right player for the crown...

Remember that the game starts to deviate substantially from history the very moment you start it. You can find dramatic differences even if you load a recent save. "Normal" is a sort of strange state. For example, I started a game last night as a count in Spain, and before 50 years had passed, Spain was almost entirely lost to the Muslims. Just started a second game in the same position and Castille is becoming a dominant power.

Enjoy the chaos, and don't trust history to repeat itself.
