I'm playing my first game as a Duke and I now control 4 providence's directly. I'm not sure how I gained one but I think it's from when my king went to war.

So I now I have this providence that's pretty far away and I was thinking about making my brother the Count. Is there any advantage to this?

Afaik you may as well hold on to the provinces you've got unless it effects your effectiveness much. You get a warning flag when it drops below 100%. Sources elsewhere on this forum report that you should never drop below 80%, else bad things start happening. For values between 80 and 100 it's a matter of how much you gain from the additional province(s) vs how much you lose being ineffective.

Giving surplus land to your family does indeed make sense. It reduces the risk of losing provinces through inheritance + family ties gives you a bonus on their loyalty.

One thing to keep in mind is that an isolated Count far from your home provinces is extremely vulnerable. Depending on the environment, your brother may be on a death watch if you proceed as you suggested. I generally try to avoid making a vassal in a remote outpost, unless I have enough territory there to give the new vassal a truly defendable realm, or if I can keep some land there myself in order to defend him.

This is kind a a "darned if you do / don't" situation. You make the brother the count and he's isolated and vulnerable, and may decide to rebel and it would be expensive and difficult to reign him in. If you leave it in your demense you'll eventually get "this part of your demense is too far away for effective leadership" (or similar) and a possible revolt.

I've learned that if someone owns an isolated county, or a county bordered by lots of enemies, it is a good idea to give them a second county that is in a safe area, so they can't automatically be annexed when sieged by a death stack of troops.

on the other hand, if your brother gets stomped, you don't really lose anything important AND he comes back to your court with his court, giving you some potential new talent.

You lose that territory from your realm. Whether that counts as "anything important" depends on the specific circumstances and your overall goals for the campaign.

Well....... I have read the replies and there is one thing no-one has mentioned. When you grant a title to a member of your court you get a slight boost to your reputation. So if there are counties by your main demense you have your eye on and you have an honourable reputation then you can claim one..... wait for a while then grant this distant county to your brother which if you have waited long enough will give you a Honourable reputation again and you can go to war and if successful win this county you want.

Though the other things are deffinatly important to consider too
