Yo!

My friend and I would like to play a coop-esque game where he reconquers Spain and I play as a local Norse lord in the Spanish region as well, starting in the viking age.

So I made a custom Norse-culture, Norse-ethnicity (not that it matters), Christian lord in Spain and was surprised to discover I couldn't toggle loot/raider on my troops. It simply said "Owner not allowed to raid". This persisted wether I was independent or a vassal of a local lord.

However, in the Knut the Great start you CAN loot as a Norse Christian lord and I recall beeing able to raid even after converting from a game long ago.

So what gives? What determines wether I can loot or not? Do I have to start in Scandinavia and conquer a piece of Spain for myself to be able to play this type of game?

Thanks for any suggestions

I am not an expert but as far as I know if you add "allow_looting = yes" (without the quotation marks) under the culture, it should work; you may also want to include "seafarer = yes" but I am not sure what it does.

I might have worded myself poorly. I meant I used the custom character creator tool to create a norse-cultured character :)

Are you starting as feudal?

Yes, in both the Knut the Great-start and in our viking age start I would start as feudal, however in one I can raid and in the other I can not.

I'm somewhat surprised Knut can raid, but I'd imagine that you can't raid because your top liege cannot. Independent? Norse top liege? Raid away.

I assume this is because the early Normans (e.g.) gave up large-scale raiding when they joined the French Crown (e.g.).

This is what I assumed as well, however I even tried to raid while beeing independent and still was not permitted.

I think I've found the answer, in case anyone else would be interested:

In order to be able to toggle looter it seems to me that your character and capital needs to be of a culture that permits raiding AND your top liege's culture must also permit raiding.

That can't be right since you start in 867 as Halfdan with an Angelcynn capital yet you can raid.
