When does Japan force Germany to recall Falkenhausen on Historical focus settings?

In order to progress down the "Mission to Germany" branch on the China Foreign Investors tree, there is a requirement that von Falkenhausen has not been recalled to Germany. I have never taken the Germany sub branch before, but in a current game, it is late 1940, and Falkenhausen hasn't been recalled yet.

I looked up this event on the Wiki (see below), and it says it is triggered by a Japan focus called "Sever Sino-German Ties." I can't find this focus on the Japan tree.

Is this requirement from an older patch of the game, and no longer relevant? Or is this just something that will happen automatically when Japan signs the Tripartite Pact?

Hmm. "falkenhausen_recalled" is present in the WTT_Germany.txt events, and in the German "Befriend Japan" focus. Germany should take the Befriend Japan focus in historical mode, but not particularly early. Maybe they haven't got around to it yet.

So, it happens when Germany does something. I'm not sure if Japan can cause it though.

Ah, I see that now in the German "Befriend Japan" focus. Thanks for the clue. I was intently combing through the Japan focus tree, and the answer was in a different focus tree the whole time! D'oh!

If I'm doing my math right, it seems that AI Germany should complete the Befriend Japan on historical focus settings in mid-Dec 1940. To confirm, I grabbed an old Mexico save where I made no effort to influence European events, and I can see that Falkenhausen was recalled by Jan 1941.

On a related point, if one of the Chinas completes all the focuses that require Falkenhausen while he's still in China, do you get to keep him as a general and Chief of Army after he's been recalled?

Ok, looking at the focuses in Mission to Germany sub-branch, it seems that if you complete the Falkenhausen Citizenship focus before he gets recalled, you can keep him even after Germany completes the "Befriend Japan" focus.

The focus text is:

We should ensure that [the German advisors] can stay here, no matter how the political situation might change

If anyone has seen different, please comment below.

Experimented with this some more, and the results were unexpected. Germany recalled Falkenhausen on Oct 1, 1940. I then got a pop-up saying the "Government Idea of Alexander Falkenhausen is no longer valid". Here's what happened next:

  • Even though I had completed the Citizenship focus 6+ months prior, the Falkenhausen idea was removed.
  • Also, I had already hired him as my Chief of Army, and when the Idea went invalid, he was removed from this position.
  • However, the National Spirit of "Chinese General Staff" was retained, even though you have to first offer citizenship to get this spirit.
  • And, finally, Faulkenhausen himself still appears as a General leading one of my armies.

That's interesting and unexpected result, I also feel that that Germany's Befriend Japan/China focus should be 30 days instead of 70 days. As it's just not quite worth to take this focus most of the time.

I tend to rush giving Falky citizenship, as he's a decent general for anyone other than ROC (they get some solid generals and can pick up more from the warlords) and I don't want to lose access to him. I tend not to use him as an advisor, as most countries seem to have an equivalent advisor who won't get recalled (as that Guan Xingde dude in your screenshot shows) so I didn't notice if he was getting blocked after a certain point. That may be a bug, considering that you retain the Chinese General Staff spirit and he's still available to you as a general. But hey, he's still available to you as a general. That's what really matters when you're a minor Chinese nation that's desperate for semi-decent officers.
