Older and buggier version, you mean. I'm like someone who has gone to a shop and complained about my transmission and your suggestion is that I should drive another, older car. I don't see how this really helps me.
You fell in love with the game of 1 year ago. It made sense to recommend what you loved. It wasn't another car, but the same car that you asked for.

Thanks to Paradox, however, they will be adding the ability to change options like Shattered Retreat without affecting Ironman Achievements or breaking multiplayer. So clearly I'm not alone in my complaints if they have already gone out of their way to address the issue.
Many couldn't adjust their game to the new mechanic and some were up in arms before it was out. It was only a matter of time that they make it optional. Paradox made the right choice in allowing the old way and now they won't touch mechanics with a ten foot pole.

Shattered retreat's not bad, but can be annoying at first. If the good old battle, retreat, battle -> wipe doesn't affect achievements then yes, it will be the easier way to do achievements.

No thanks, I don't want this either. If anything, I wish the combat system were more complex and the player had more agency. Then again, I'm a HOI kind of guy anyway.

Well in the game's current state, the combat is neither complex nor well thought out nor historical. The battles take too long and the tactics are too draconian. A somewhat smaller force that's within the limits of force composition will utterly annihilate a bigger force. That makes zero sense and isn't fun to play. I don't want to spend my time worrying and calculating my army compositions because that's not what I play CK2 for. If I wanted to worry about how 10% more of X unit will make my army awful I'd go play HOI or some other war oriented game, even though it doesn't make sense there either. The best way to handle combat is to just limit it to a 1 day auto resolve based on easily understandable factors. The combat system is needlessly convoluted for a game where you spend most of your time on stuff that has nothing to do with combat.
