I honestly cannot see any reason to spend the money, especially for the low success rate, for missionaries.

I just don't understand this strategic part of the game. There are so many other things to spend money on and it seems cheaper to have troops on hand to quell any rebellions.

Having the state religion in most provinces greatly reduces the stab costs, so it worths it in the long run. Makes you able to rise your stability faster, get more taxes. If you get into a big rebellion by event or maybe even civil war then it's much safer to have a good homeland with the same religion.

wait until you have a really good ADM (5 green dots ^^) monarch before taking on the hardest provinces. I like to have same religion all over my empire since it helps against War exhaustion etc. (the things stated above)

No, it is affected by your monarch's admin rating though.

If for instance your the Ottoman Empire, it means that you have and will gain a lot of non state religion provs. Those provs put a heavy burden on stab, religion tolerance, war exhaustion, etc... I think they also affect the costs of techs but not sure about that. (I prefer to play games instead of analyzing them to death; that takes away a lot of the fun IMO).

No. Your monarch diplomacy skills however can influence the success rate. The better he's at diplomacy, the higher the chance of success. Also the chance of success depends (among other things) also on whether the culture of that prov is also a state culture. If it it, expect a much higher success chance, lets say 50%, instead of the 30%. The FAQ section however holds all the specs on it. It's much more reliable than my memory :D .

For me, the chance for a same culture province tends to be around 60%-70%, while wrong culture is 20%-30%. As stated above, same religion decreases stab costs and helps in reducing revolt risk. Also, religious differences reduces the tax value of the province. All in all, you save money in the long run.

Furthermore, if you have only one province with a certain religion (say only one Orthodox province) then it's nice to convert that province as then you can 'tolerate' the other religions in your empire more using the sliders.

Well, I've tried it, and still find this too expensive and unattractive. I had a 60 percent chance of conversion, failed with three missionaries and spent almost 1,000 ducats. It's much cheaper to attack and quell the rebellions.

However, that 30 percent tax penalty is a hidden downside that I didn't realize. Is it still worth a fourth effort and this kind of spending?

Imho, yes.

(Too bad you can't manage a fully tolerant religional policy in this game with no real state religion.)

I need to study the policy sliders a little better. Maybe that's why my missionaries aren't so successful, are so expensive, or I have religious revolt problems.

I would just suggest to try to convert all of your same-culture provinces and from there try to eliminate one religion (if not totally at least from your realm) so you can lower tolerance for it, thus raising the tolerance for others. But just try to convert the provinces that are A) your culture and after that try to convert the ones that are cheap; you can convert those later once you're a richer nation.

Does it? If so, setting the respective slider to maximum, then sending the missionary and setting back the slider will give significant advantages, won't it?

That's incorrect tolerance has no bearing.

Here are the factors that influence.

convert, convert, convert

unless the success rate is very low, or the price is very high. I do conversions at 20-25% if I have the money, taking pagans first, then the easiest, hoping that events will take care of the worst .

Ahh, administrative rating matters. Now that's an important detail. And the fortress.
On the other hand.. Forts cost money to build, and they increase the size of revolts in the province. Using them as an aid to conversion might not be a good idea.
