I just remembered I had some maps from that little event. Here's the Kingdom on the eve of the King's death:

Gaston.jpg

I was mistaken about the North African provinces. What actually happened was that the last Muslim power in Iberia controlled the north-east quarter of the peninsula, and a large swathe of territory in Africa. I invaded both areas at once, and then made a deal which let the Muslim leader keep his North African provinces if he surrendered the Iberian ones.

Anyway, here's what remained under my control about six months after the King died:

The last remaining Iberian provinces were set loose shortly after this map was made

And for anybody who's interested; here is what that small Sicilian remnant grew into by the year 1182. I love maps. :)

The plain white map is something I found online. I think the original blank copy is on my other computer but I can link to it sometime tomorrow if you want it. The huge Kingdom of Italy one was just made by using a screenshot program (Screenhunter) to take six separate pictures which were then stitched together in Paint.

So, what do you do when one of your vassals-turned-pope-controller excommunicate you? Why, take all the titles from your vassals so they dont get any funny ideas about independence. Then, since your piety is way beyond the floor, and you dont have vassals to worry about, but too much money, start sending assasins to the court of your cousin who has your king-title, eliminating (ocasionally while being discovered) all the heirs that stand before your son.

While all this happen, all the titles in the kingdom are being systematically absorved by the two rivals until they hold them all(A most awesome civil war ensued for a short while, fruitless because). Sadly, just as I am so near to reclaim my kingship, it occurs to me to check my reputation, only to see im hated by the whole world. Cue for all the declarations of war to start pouring in. I was, of course, overwhelmed, and my family line (not my dinasty) was extinguished after succumbing to a combination of illness and battles, and the titles went to places as far as jerusalem and the like. I could have continued playing (I retained the dukedom of Connacht, countship of ulaid ) but the one who inherited was the sister of the usurper. I had no wish to play as that branch of the family.

Mine came being King of Italy, which I got beginning as count of Empúries (later count of Provence, later came conquests and wars, inherited Tuscany and Apulia...). At the end, I had 6 bad kings in 24 years. Ermenguer III, Gausfred II, Gausfred III, Berenguer II, Gausfred IV, Gausfred V. The last two were cousins of the formers, and the kingdom of Italy fell on the head of a foreigner, because of a bad marriage movement. William de Hauteville was crowned king of Italy, and when he died, the heir was the king of Sicily, Roger de Hauteville.

Damn it!

Shortly after, I saw how the only living members of my dynasty, the 75 years old count of Rosselló, and two kids, one of the new-born, died within three months. When my last living character, Gausfred, died, game over. Althoug, I have to say, he died in battle fighting the king of Sicily and Italy, and I offered vassalage to France. Too late, though.

All was well in the Duchy. The aging king was preparing his sons to take over when all of a sudden through the maternal line an new heir was born. Within 4 days the Duke died and this little foreign infant took most my lands. My empire crumbled in 4 days. :(
