depends on which nation im playing...i try to be historical in most cases <exception being when i play a pagan nation which has to be converted to another to make playable....shiite is my general choice for those unless i have a story in mind ...such as a lost Russia expedition in 1419 actually reaching China by way of the Siberian corridor and converting her...things like that>

..some nations i debate my religion changes a bit despite history ...France... she really wasnt tied all that close to Rome and catholicsm..her church elite used the church to maintain power above and beyond what it did in most other nations <except Spain> church was an excuse rather then a cause it seemed...so sicne france did have many Calvinist provs...changing her to that doesnt bother me so much..i havent done it yet..but would be interesting...

a Germany that stays catholic would be interesting...with a diferent political setting int he world perhaps their choices would be diffrent this time around...i usually play a catholic to the end teutonic Knights

Poland.Austria, Spain and Portugal...catholic is a given..i wont even contemplate changing..it was too much of who and what they were to mess with

Sweden...i get tempted to try Calvinism..sicne i beleive thats whats they did during the great 30 year war rathger then remain protestant...yet in game they dont convert to it ..they always stay protestant

Sweden was protestant all through the TYW. They were just very orthodox about it, as is almost always the case with newly converted people. Calvinism and Lutheranism are similar but not the same, and they certainly regarded each other with great suspicion back then.

To answer the original question: I prefer keeping it historical. I actually tried going reformist as Sweden just for the hell of it, but I don't recommend it. The money you get is too little to go around.

I go for historical religions myself, but I believe that the protestant Religion brings the most benefit. Changing from Lutheran to Calvinists nearly halves your income (you get a bonus as Protestant and a penalty as Calvinists), and I don´t think the increased army strength and the extra colonist are quite worth that...

Historical ones of xure :D Though because catholic is such a crap religion to have in the game I often play with catholics to spice up my game slightly. Never do protestant ones.

From a gameplay point of view, it is. Protestants get almost a third extra income, plus a one-time bonus for converting in the first place, and extra colonists to boot. Catholics get a bonus diplomat. Whoopee, I can get an extra two VPs by arranging an additional royal marriage.

Noone would know what you were rambling about when you tried to convert them... Sweden was solidly Christian, and asatro wasn't really an organised religion at the time.

Most of the research on asatro has been loose puzzle-solving done in the wake of nationalist late 1800s.

Just my belief on that minority belief...;)

True that asatro wasn't an organized religion. Recent studies have brought doubt to if it has ever been one, before now.
On Sweden being solidly christian at that time: Most common people lived in a belief-system that incorporated trolls, giants, elfs and even the old norse gods as well as christian (and not just protestant) notions. So my guess is that if you decided to convert Sweden into asatro (in the modern meaning of the word) you wouldn't have too much trouble (with the common people, that is). You might even be able to put Christ himself in Valhalla right next to Odin.

dont know much about this except that i do know the finnish tribes were still predominalty pagan..paying more often than not lip service to chrstianity..Finnish cavalry under Gustav were often heard to curse and make remarks in pagan gods names and often were very supersticious...generally they were considered only marginally civilized and thus not truly Christianized yet

Yep ... absolutely no contest. The only reasons not to be protestant are: you have sooo much money that you can't spend it all anyway, and you want the extra colonist; or, you don't like seeing something as ridiculous as a Protestant Papal States.

Hence I never use it. I haven't played much with historically lutheran states then as u can guess :D

We did guess!:D I play England a lot, always as Protestant.....but that's more historically accurate than what the game AI does with them!

I did play Austria as Catholic-but I take Venice Protestant!:D
