I had saved a week of effort in a saved game file. I had managed to stop Germany with UK and had even occupied 3 western provinces. And then poof! My saved game is gone! It's replaced by an older saved game! What the hell is this????

I remember doing that before. I was paying more attention to tv.
I also have a mouse that likes to double click, despite being reconfigured

Are you sure that its the correct savegame? Have a look in the folder using Windoze Explorer and check the date stamp on the file.
One of the things that can be confusing here is that the save and load file lists are not sorted at all. They show the files in the order they are actually stored in the directory (which is not how you see them in Windows). So if you're expecting the latest save to be the last file in the list it may not be.
If you have been deleting saved games your new saves will be on top of the
list,iirc.
