During the first 50 or so years Japan, Manchuris and Korea attack China and grab a two province deep region of China along the coast, then Japan diplo-annexes Korea and conqures the Manchu portion of occupied China. Sometime later I look at the Japanese islands and all the provinces are rebel-controlled, but because of the Chinese provinces gained the government doesn't fall. The strange thing is that they make no attempt to retake their homeland.

It seems better to me. I don't see England ripped up quite as much, and France tends to stay together once they unite in my games... maybe it depends on the aggression level... I guess the AI would be more likely to go after the rebels on high aggresiveness... maybe?

So far in 1.04 I've seen the AI react more aggressively to rebels. And more intelligently. As Bradenburg, I've watch as Sweden and Denmark have repeatedly put down rebels in the Northern German states they control. And the way they do it ... The Rebels appear and lay siege to the city. Over time the Rebels lose some forces to attrition, as the Siege slowly eats away at the city. And them, just before the siege turns Red, Sweden or Denmark move in a force to beat the rebels! I've seen this time and time again where they let the rebels get weaker first, THEN move in for the kill. It's frighteningly efficent. Or .. just luck?

How about Aragon getting much of the Middle East through defections? In one game, they were fighting a war against someone in that area, managed to get one province in the peace settlement...and then half the Persian Empire defected after some particularly nasty event caused them all to rebel. Of course, they soon lost them again, but it was certainly strange to see...

It's not as bad as it used to be but:

On topic: France collapses outright and is reunified to its historical bounds by...

The French Catholics

As Brandenburg...

Got into a war with Denamrk and her allies, among which was Byzantium. Well I take Holstein, and then notice that one of my provinces is being seiged! By Byzantium! Some 10k men under one of the Konstanine guys. War ends, and he has no way to get home! The king of Byzantium found himself in un intended exile! Then Denamrk declares war on me again, and the Byzantium force is wiped out. No mroe Konstantine.

My favorite line in the message box so far:

"(recently independent, lanlocked) Ukraine joins in on the same side as Aztecs and Maya in their war against Spain."

And this happened not once, not twice, but several times over the course of a few decades.

"(recently independent, lanlocked) Ukraine joins in on the same side as Aztecs and Maya in their war against Spain."

That's hilarious! If they're recently independent and landlocked, how did they even find out about the Aztecs & Maya?

Here are a few from my recently completed Papal States campaign:

I had my independence repeatedly guaranteed by the Ottoman Empire and China for about a 20 year period around 1540

Austria was simultaneously in wars against 14 countries - by itself

US freely changing to Catholic

US controlling Bretagne

US in a war with Netherlands vs. <drumroll> Atjeh & Ayutthaya

I saw Venice sending two settlers at once to Santee (screenshots to prove it)

Message lines:

"Dahomey dishonored a Military Alliance she had with Benin and United States"

"China entered a military alliance with Ottoman Empire, Uzbek Kaganate, Khazak Horde and Chagatai Khanate"

"China joins the war on the side of Ottoman Empire, Uzbek Kaganate, Khazak Horde and Chagatai Khanate in their war against Mameluks"

Newly independent countries get the maps of whatever country they emerged from--probably Russia in this case.

The strangeness is what makes this game interesting. Grand Campaign, it's now 1518 (playing as Bradenburg, the great unifier of Germany). SO far I've seen

1) 1475 -- Burgandy controls Kexholm (along Finland / Russia Border)
2) Around same time, Genoa controlling Kaffa and Kerch on the Black Sea (seems they have a taste for the area as a lot of folks report this)
3) I offer peace to Denmark in a war, asking for Bremen and Vorpommern (only German regions they own -- I already have Holstein from early war). Offer rejected. Two months later, Denmark offers me peace, giving me Bremen, Vorpommern, Jutland, and 50 ducats.
4) Poland is being severely beat by my forces, Bohemia, Hungary, and Munster, so far having lost control of 9 of owned 12 provinces. Poland appears to not be building any troops. Why? The answer appears with the declaration that Poland has claimed Defender of the Catholic Faith (Prayer versus Pikes ... I'd go with the pikes).
5) An alliance of England, Denmark, and Navarra declare war on the Ottomon Empire and allies (and except for items in the Balkans, they are no where near each other).
6) France attacked England, England attacked Aragon, and Aragon attacked France (interesting three-way war which started over two months).

They had those provinces in 1419...

What patch are you playing, and are they near each other at all (I don't get that 'items in the Balkans' part)?

6) France attacked England, England attacked Aragon, and Aragon attacked France (interesting three-way war which started over two months).
Nice :D
