In general they are mix of INT and CAS. They are neither as good as INF when it comes to air-to-air, nor are they as good as CAS/TAC when it comes to air-to-ground.
They have longer range than INT, which is great when operating in remote areas (pacific) and areas without airfields (inner parts of SOV). Their increased range also allows to provide cover for long-range bombers like TAC and help against forward aircocver your STR may encounter.
They can be mixed with CAS (like FGT+CAS+CAS+CAS) to make your airstack more resilient against enemy air cover, while not giving up all air-to-ground power for one slot.
