I've seem to notice that the Mughal Empire in northern India always seem to get huge fortresses before any other nation has ever heard of them. This time I checked my savefile. They have landtech 34(!) in 1780. The closest nation behind them is Austria(me) with 29. I have seen this happen with the Mughal before. Who are these people? Are they the military geniues that history forgot?

They never seem to use the technological advantage to expand though...

The way the tech in of nations in various places work are: in india, same as Europe. in Asia, tech advance like europe but cannot build buildings. in Americas, tech cannot advance. The Mugal Empire, whose tech is allowed to advance like Europe, also have very rich provinces, allowing their tech to advance faster than some Europeans, a historical inaccuracy.

The Indian states begin the game with impressive fortifications, higher than they should ever be able to build on their own. I suppose this is in order to give them a realistic measure of defense to later European aggression. The Mughals certainly shouldn't be leading in tech, though. If they advance at the same rate as Europeans, this is a huge mistake.

I do not think that this is a huge mistake. It does resemble history. When first europeans(Portugese) reached India they saw a rich land with many exotic things. They started exporing silks, ivory, and other things from India. Anyway, India at that period was very strong but it wasn't united. First of all all castles and fortifications in India were located on top of mountains or some kind of hieghs. They were the first people to take advatage of hieghts. India was also very populated and had its own military system. The British never actually conquered it. The only thing British ever did was supply some of the local kingdoms with firearms. This action created a long and bloody war in India between different Radjas. In the end everyone of them crawled under British protectorate which in turn led to full occupation.

There is another gameplay and technical issue at stake here.....:)

Have you noticed that any single indian or chinese province is as large on the map (viewed by my eyes at least) as any average sized province in Europe? We who know our geography know that this is a gross disortion of actual sizes, a feature that was not possible to avoid at the time for the production of the gamemap.

Now as the fortification in the province city reflects/portraites the fortification level of the province as a whole and the relative hardship to control all forts in the province a province in southern china which is as large as 1/5's of Europe should have a very high fortification level. That quantity can't be shown is bad, but we have to live with it and accept that everything is portraited as quality. Hence the Mughal forts sometimes looks like they are 100's of years ahead of the Tech forerunners. :)

Now I understand the large forifications, that seems like a good solution. But the high techlevel? I suppose that you don't mean that armies that comes from a large provnice should be harder to defeat?

Is there something that limits the Mughals tech from having any impact on anything but fortresses or what?
