I've been playing as England and now I have all this money....

How should I spend it? Do your Catholic provinces automatically switch to Protestantism or do you have to do it yourself?

Oh, and generally you'll get some Spread of Protestantism events where random provinces convert, I believe. This will likely happen over the course of years, but I believe all provinces will convert in the end. I'm fairly sure, anyway, it happened that way when I played Sweden.

Not in the regular GC you won't. Unless these were just added recently.

I'd say spend the money on conversions.

Hehehe, would that they did!

You have to do one of three things to get a province to convert:

1) Wait for it to convert as part of a scripted event for your nation. An example would be the event during England's 17th Century dealing with Cromwell. Don't hold your breath.

2) Wait for it to convert as part of a random event. The random event "Conversion of Heretics" will probably fire once or twice during your Grand Campaign, converting a random province of yours to Protestantism. Not very helpful.

3) Send in a missionary (click on the guy with the broad white collar in the lower left of the side window, right above the mini-map). This is an expensive option, and it is often very chancy, with base chances of roughly 20-25% unless the province happens to have your national culture. For a large country like England, especially if you have expanded on the Contintent, you can spend years at the effort and just boatloads of money.

Of course, if you don't convert your provinces, they don't yield nearly as much income (-30% for being wrong religion). There are other minuses as well. A more complete explanation can be found at [thread=157982]this thread[/thread].

Have fun! :)

Don't stay protestant if you've expanded on the continent (namely in France and the Netherlands). ;)

Would you by any chance be playing with Alun's Reformation mod ? This seems very close to it.

And, well, it's AGCEEP. That incorporates the Reformation Mod, so I guess that's the answer. :)

I just didn't know what the mod did, that's all.

Yet, it doesn't depend on the state religion of the country, but on the provinces, and on random effects.

I'm actually playing an England GC at the moment and am a little ahead of you. What to do depends on what territory you control. If you have, and intend to keep, french territory you may be better off as a Catholic power, so switch back and start converting Protestants. If, as I have done, you are in control of Britain and Ireland, and opted out of France, you should stay Protestant or go Reformed in the long term. Once Jean Calvin fires some of your provinces will go Reformed and you will have 3 religions - so one has to go. Wait for Elizabeth and send missionaries to the Catholic provinces.
