I'm playing as France and I entered into my first coalition. To tell you the truth, I forgot I was even in it as it was some days ago. The coalition contained myself, Aragon and Portugal and the target of the coalition was an increasingly powerful Castile. The reasons I entered it were as follows:

*Didn't want Castile to end up owning the whole Iberian peninsula because they hate me and I hate them.
*Felt sorry for Aragon which was down to just 3 provinces after being ravaged by both Castile and Naples.

So I forgot I was in the coalition and ended up getting dragged in to a war between Portugal and Castile. I'm not entirely sure what the war was about, possibly a diplomatic insult or something petty. It wasn't something worth fighting for anyway, because at the end of it no land between Portugal and Castile changed hands. The war started off quite badly for my team. England joined with Castile and pounded me for a while but then they got distracted and went off to fight Portugal in Iberia. I used this breathing space to occupy Normandy and Labourd, the two provinces England still owns on the continent, and reinforce my armies.

I then occupied Baern (or is it Bearn?) which is an excellent province to defend (as I learned the hard way after losing a well led army of over 20,000 men to a silly 5-unit rebel rabble) and used mercenaries to slowly whittle down the smaller stacks of enemy forces. The point is, I was slowly winning the god damned war... when I get a message that it's all over. My "friend" Portugal has made peace with Castile and in that peace I was forced to pay money AND abandon two of my vassals - Barr and Corsica.

I was winning! I had a bigger army!

Screw coalitions, man.

Win faster or stay out of coalitions... :/

Another thing to remember, especially in a coalition war, when you aren't the war leader is that your war score =/= the war leader's war score. While you may well have been winning handily the overall war could be terrible, especially in cases where the war goal is something other than superiority. You personally could have a 90+ war score from blockades/occupation and still be on the losing side if you ignore the war goal or the other nations on your side are busy getting steamrolled.

There should be an option of:

"Screw this peace! Not with the mighty Kingdom of [X]! We'll fight on!",

possible when you are not the warleader and your warleader signs a peace.

Can't believe I lost Corsica as my vassal though. I was going to diplo-annex them eventually. France ended up owning Corsica historically, I was going to do the same. Not too bothered about losing Bar though. Ah well. I'll look for new adventures. The Byzantines are holding on with The Morea and Athens after Ottomans took Constantinople. I think I'll ally myself with them and try to help them survive and maybe re-take some of Greece.

To be honest, that's just how coalitions work - so no surprise there :) If anything, you should a) not have gotten in the coalition or b) have protected the coalition leader.
