So I'm playing as the Salian HRE emperor and now I've conquered the ERE throne for myself. Assuming that in the 12th/13th century a German Catholic emperor (who controls 80% of Christian Europe btw) would be crowned Roman Emperor twice - erm - what would he do? Maybe keep his original HRE title, destroy the ERE title to further legitimize the HRE, or possibly the exact opposite and claim the throne directly descended of ancient imperial Rome? Or perhaps just keep them both as one symbolizes Western Rome and the other its eastern counterpart? Any ideas?

Probably say that he united the Eastern and Western Roman Empire.
Yeah, but gamewise would that mean keeping the ERE title, destroying HRE and reforming the Roman Empire via the decision?

You could keep both but make the ERE your primary, allowing you to reform the Roman Empire, no?
Yup, but the succession may be a pain with the Greeks voting differently than the rest of Europe. And it would be a bit weird, wouldn't it (All hail Heinrich VII. emperor of the Roman Empire and emperor of the Holy Roman Empire)?

Honestly in this hypothetical I think the monarch would simply refer to themselves as the Roman emperor or the legitimate successor to that title. Though in fairness the distinction between that that the Byzantine emperor is non existent.

Alright then, I guess I'll just destroy the HRE then (the vassal opinion malus will be a pain) and reform the Roman Empire from ERE.

Difficult to say. Would depend on how powerfull he is. The nobility wouldn't allow destroying one of them.

Maybe he would split it again. Such a big feudal realm wouldn't work. The Greek would demand having him in Constantinople, the German would expext him travelling trough the german lands and crush the italian revolts.

So give one of them to your brother.

Hah, that's not going to happen. I worked way too hard to get a claim on it. I'm trying to unite Europe under a single Christian Empire, so roleplaying is only my second goal. I do plan on moving to Constantinople, but don't you worry I won't stop crushing those rebellious Italians.

If it happened realistically in history then probably you would just say you've "reunited the Roman Empire" and combine both titles into one. But for your game, I would destroy the HRE title and just claim the ERE one and truly "reform the Roman Empire". After all, with the ERE/Roman title, you can claim an unbroken lineage of Emperors from the days of Augustus!
