Was your great grandfather unique, or did Scotland have any such sentiment? That'd be very interesting. They were, if I remember correctly, quick to modernize, though I don't know how industrialization hit Scotland.

But that does make me think of one thing I want to see in the game--which will be harder to create: a Western-style democracy or a communist state?

technically it would be possible for such an event to exist (or something with similar geste). It is the era of the 'Megali Idea' for Greece after all.

Though I doubt a series of events such as this would make it into the official release of the game, I wouldn't be suprised if this is one of the first mods available after the release of the game.

He certainly wasn't unique, there was fairly strong communist sympathies amongst many of the unions and various socialist groups, particularly in the shipbuilding areas (Glasgow being the most obvious example). My great-grandfather and great uncle were both strongly communist - they'd fly the soviet and communist party flags during demonstrations, though my grandmother usually forced them to take them down :makes whip noise::). My grandfather was more socialist with communist leanings - though by then some of the realities of Stalin's regime had started to sink in. The Communist Party of Scotland is still around.

As to how much of a real possibility this was - I doubt it. Too many political forces against them and too little room for maneuver within the structure of the UK.

I'd like to make Italy united as a URI United Regions (states) of Italy.
A federalist enlighten liberal green republic divided in varius Regions/States in the rispect of the varius specific cultures.

Federalist: to give more freedom and improve the wonders of the varius Italian regions.

Enlighten Liberal: to give economical freedom to improve the develop of the country, but with the respect of the lower class.
So the state is present to help the develop of ALL people.

Green: to protect the environment. Industrialism is good just with the respect of nature and humankind.

Republic: In honour of the SPQR of the Roman Empire. And to give more false choices to the electorate.

I wonder, if there be any possibility in VIC for Poland to win back its independence from Russia, Austro-Hungary and Prussia. There were major uprisings in Polish territories in 1831 nad 1863 (not counting several smaller in VIC period), of which the first one could really end up lucky.

Restore France to it's former glory. Take whatever steps necessary to improve the birth rate, and France could have a population of 100 million by 1914. Dominate Europe and forge ahead in science. Do a 'Germany' basically.

Japan. Play it historically, but make sure and get ALL of Sakhalin island when it's time to slap the Russians down.

Brazil. With it's long hold on slavery, and hugely powerful agricultural barons, this is primed for a commie revolution. Do a 'USSR', rapid industrialisation and export the revolution to the rest of Latin America.

Take Haiti and unify the Carribean, Italy style. If the Confederacy survives, it's showdown time between the free slaves and the slave masters.

The ultimate challenge: Defeat the treacherous British as the Zulu, and go on to enslave the Boers and build a great Zimbabwe.

Muhammad Ali almost pulled it off - seized all of Greater Syria and defeated the Ottomans at Adana in 1839 - had the British and French not intervened in 1840 the Osmanli family might very well have lost their throne. How Vic handles Egypt will be very interesting. I created an Egypt mod for HoI because Egypt was treated as an integral part of the British Empire, which by 1936 it clearly was not. Hopefully it will not suffer the same fate in Vic.

Algeria (or at least Algiers) was taken over by the French in 1830 and though it would take them almost 40 years the French eventually conquer Algeria so that won't be the source of an Arab rival..other than Morocco and Tunisia there were no other functionally independent Arab states that could remotely challenge Egypt as the center of the Arab world in the 19th Century. The Wahhabis in Najd tried, but Muhammad Ali kicked them back into the desert in ~1815 and they'd be out of any real position of power until they allied with the Al Sa`ud family in the 1890s (if I am remembering correctly) culminating in the establishment of the Sa`udi kingdom at Riyadh in 1902.

And it's not completely fair to say the later 19th C Ottoman sultans were lazy - Abdulhamid II had a reputation as a micromanager in imperial affairs and the Empire preserved its territorial integrity for the most part from 1880 until 1908 (Crete being the major loss) and the Ottoman handed the Greeks their backsides in the 1896 war. Doesn't remove the fact he was a paranoid autocrat who used Islam as a political tool and tolerated a great deal of corruption. Considering the dire situation of the empire he inherited in 1876 his reign was not 100% a disaster.
