I think that yes, I was primarily interested in what-ifs. Like, say, what if the Ottoman Empire collapsed into a dual monarchy between Turks and Greeks, centered in Constantinople, which gave way to a republic that stabilized the Black Sea and Middle East for years to come?

Or what if the Caribbean was ruled by a powerful confederacy, which was able to consolidate trade and monopolize shipping in the West Indies, effectively ending the slave trades--African and Chinese--that dominated European mercantilist economies?

What if a mighty empire reared its head in Northern Africa and swarmed north to Iberia, intent on restoring the Caliphate of Cordoba?

This game is a combination of the best length, the best tech tree, the fullest map, the widest political spectrum, and the best engine at world simulation so far. I cannot wait to see what I can do.

And thanks, Keravnos. Too bad our ancestors' empires overlapped. The good thing about games, though, is that there's a chance for everyone's country to be created.

Well, in the what-if category, the situation I'd like to try is:

The United Kingdom of Portugal and Brasil.

This was the name between 1815 and brasilian independence. So, pretend Portugal and Brasil agree on the constitution. Then the brasilians don't get annoyed and declare independence. Might be fun to try to manage this transatlantic nation...

Not just keeping the Empire, but restoring God's rightful bounty to the glory of the Spanish realm. Reconquering the rogue nations of South America, reuniting the oppressed masses in Milan with their rightful liege lord, and the ultimate; Dropping in on the Dutch to repay 100 years of revolts during EU2 :)

IIRC, the Bear Flag Republic thing in California was just to make sure that they didn't get left as part of Mexico after the (ongoing) Mexican-American War. They dropped the idea once they were informed that America did, in fact, plan to take California in the peace treaty. The flag, however, has been kept around - it's been the state flag since California *became* a state in 1850. It still bears the lettering "California Republic", even...

The one I'd like to try, actually, is keeping California independent (or breaking it off around the same time as Texas... hmm... a California-Texas alliance maybe...) and maintaining the California-Arizona region as an independent country, allied with but not part of the US... (it was really difficult to deal with federal law and administration in the early days, when travel times between California and the rest of the US could be measured in months.)

I knew it! I knew it!! You people are all out to get the Turks! Bunch of Hellenists! Everybody's a Byzantium freak on this board!

Sorry. I had to be the stereotypical nay-sayer making accusations of favoritism.

But let me just say I'm going to quite enjoy making sure that event never happens...

Now that I think about it, though, have any of you guys noticed how just about everybody is happy with this game? If you like Mongols, the English, the Irish, Scandinavians of every color cross, Russians, Iberians, Turks and Greeks, of course, Italians... Well, I guess native Americans, Africans, and a lot of Asians get the short end of the stick, but it is history. But almost every nation, every identity, every faith, every culture--there's a nation for you, and options in history. You can actually make something out of the measliest nation. It's very cool.

I was joking; that event is in EU II. ;)

And although I wrote that event, I've never particularly cared to play either Byzantium or Greece. :p

Wow, really? I actually kinda thought it would be cool to provoke Greece into a war, let their empire return, and fight them out all over again. You know, keep the mostly lazy sultans of the late empire on their toes, toughen 'em up a little. Guess I should practice recognizing humor.

I really feel stupid now. I'm so desperate for Victoria info, I'll take anything I can get, I guess.

On a completely different subject, however, I just realized--the Aegean islands in EUII were one province, excluding Rhodes. In Hearts of Iron, there were three, I believe, again apart from Rhodes. And in Victoria, we're having even more detail. Hmm.

And of course, no empire-forging events would be unwelcome in Victoria. It's so lonely without the old Byzantines around. I tend to miss them after a few hundred years.

I rather doubt that the Byzantines will make it into official Victoria as an ahistorical country, but I'm confident that if they're not included someone will create a mod for them. :)

Don't underestimate Sweden's <ahem> enhancements in Paradox games. I'm sure AI Sweden will outstrip it's EU counterpart and manage to hold territory south of the Danube by game's end ;)

A country with that much potential, interest, and sentiment--undoubtedly.

As for other new countries to create... I was just thinking about Polynesia... If, say, New Zealand started taking all the islands of the surrounding Pacific, no-one would notice, right?

I think there's a lot of potential there.

And as for India, I think it's time for the Hindu south to start banding together and moving against foreign invaders... Maybe some imported ideologies would help.

Maybe it's just Travancore. Seeing the screenshot, I got memories of The Years of Rice and Salt.
