My first move that is truly ahistorical will be to try and play the Brittish Raj and establish independence, if it's possible. Perhaps I'll peek greedily towards my neighbors, such as Persia and Siam, for some easy access to resources.

The long-term plan would be to become a new Great Britain, with my own colonies and navy. The natural enemy would be Japan, of course, but then again... What reaches could I not strive for if I ally with them and decide to carve up China in between the two of us?
Is the British Raj a playable country? I figured it was just part of the UK like all the other European colonies.

It's a puppet of the UK, but I am fairly certain it is its own nation.

Interesting. Forgive me for the lack of knowledge on the subject, but is there a historical reason for why this may be the case and not for other colonies? Or is this purely for gameplay purposes?

After a revolt in 1857 the british figured they couldn't run such a landmass with so many citizens in the same way that they ran other colonies.
It was it's own thing, ran with it's own sports team in the Olympics, it's own congress, etc.

There's more of it right here.

EDIT:
This lad here will probably be the head of the British Raj.

Not in 1936 I doubt.

More likely: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Hope,_2nd_Marquess_of_Linlithgow

He didn't actually become Viceroy until April '36, but it doesn't look like Paradox can be bothered to depict historical heads of government unless they are familiar to lots of people. For example, they use Chamberlain as British PM even though he wasn't PM for the first 18 months of the game!

First will probably be playing as the Soviet Union run by Trotsky and focusing more on spreading communism to other countries rather than expanding the Soviet Union as a country.

Well historical is known so after playing Italy historically through the tutorial except the part about you know losing and all I'm going to take German down the compromise with Poland route and try to focus on the west completely including England, than turn my focus to the Soviets as I plan an early naval build. ;)

I find the current playthrough of the Commune of France very interesting so I'll give that a go. I think on stream they missed intervening in Spain because they let the game play and missed days while they chatted and showed off features to us. So I'll try to rush Spanish intervention so I can get my Spanish allies to defend against the axis. Then I'd focus on getting rid of that horrible land doctrine research debuff. Hopefully I could get an extended maginot line before the war begins. Then pray for no naval invasions.

My second preference would be The commune of Australia. I wouldn't go fascist because I want to fight Japan for the control of Asia and not have to race them for everything or have to carve it up after the war. Basically I build up Australia from 1936 to be a very militarized nation and take on Japan head on. I'd strengthen my position by taking the colonies of European countries that are already swallowed by Germany.

No, it was because the Spanish Civil War ended very quickly, and France cannot intervene unless it has unlocked a particular National Focus, which Daniel had no time to unlock before the Nationalists won.

Just re-watched the stream and yeah it seems like it ended much quicker than they could have finished the 70 day national focus. Still, I think in my ahistorical play-through I am going to rush for that national focus. I really want to see how much of a difference the Spanish would make in the defense of France.

You shouldn't really have to rush, though. The issue is obviously that the Civil War ends far too quickly; as with the Chinese communist regime, there needs to be some arbitrary modifiers in place to help maintain a stalemate. The Civil War is supposed to be a major European event in which the two opposing factions can support their side, and it can drag on long enough for plenty to happen. That obviously has not been the case in any of the streams we've seen, and so the devs should do something about that.
