Urban farming methods (both hydroponics and aquaponics) tend to be ridiculously inefficient in their energy use and mostly work because of exorbitant real estate prices. I don't think it's a good model for an isolated human outpost.

So?

Elaborate what you think think they are inefficient in (soil usage, energy needs, water needs, etc), elaborate why those needs are a bottleneck/supply issue, and elaborate why this is in your opinion prohibitive.

We use terribly inefficient systems all the time if their output is still crucial and if they are without an alternative.

Farming via hydroponics might be a very inefficient way of generating nutrients on mars, but if they are cheaper than transfer from Earth, and they are without an alternative, then they will be used, at which point you are talking financial viability, not technology.

I have to side with keynes here. Specify your issues, and then we can talk. Otherwise, its just hot air.
