What was your beginner-country?

I got the game for christmas (my mother kindly imported the game to the UK for me from the US). I started on Normal/Normal too, as Spain.

I don't know why, I just thought it would be a nice challenge to re-build Spain into a Great Power. Of course, this was a major mistake, not knowing the game mechanics and the revolts were driving me crazy. I did ok really (I managed to finish the game at 3am on Boxing morning and was very unpopular with the family for not joining in the Xmas festivities) and got Spain into an 10th placed finish - not bad for a newbie I thought.

After that, I tried Prussia and they have been my preference ever since.

USA - did OK, nothing spectacular, but then this was 1.01. Then Greece (see sig). Even less spectacular. Now Japan wiv VIP. The economy is a total bastard now...

My first real game was with Brazil (sure, with the aid of the famous guide-for-beginners) and my first unaided game was with Sweden: ranked #2 behind - ages behind, actually - UK in the 1900s, I have up soon after, when Russia DoWed me and started eating Skandinavia alive :rofl:

All those games on normal/normal.

Started with several 10 year games with Belgium to learn the ropes and then straight in at the deep in with a Russian WC based on Blitzkrieg's AAR. Thats still not complete but I'm at1908 with two 1 province countries left - its as good as won but I thought I'd take it out to 1920 to see what else happens.

I did a few Brazils, a Peru, then tried the USA and chickened my way out of all the scripted events and avoided the Civil War. Now I'm playing as Russia. My problem is that I've been playing for a month (in the real world) and I still feel like it's the first time!

My first country? Dennmark! Small, but with a lively and quite operative economy, and a fairly nice navy and army. I did fairly well, colonized like mad, and held on during the wars with Prussia, then eventually got owned by Russia and Sweden.

Then I read Memnon's manual, got 10,000x better at the game, and civilized China. Now I'm playing as Ireland in the new VIP, after some aborted games as Persia in VIP .2b.

Since then, I have only played Russia past the first few days ... can't seem to stay interested in the others much. But I love playing Prussia

First country I played was Prussia...Went bankrupt twice, had rebel scum overthrow the government, but came out a great power.

After that game I started playing with my friends as the Ottoman's, and have since moved on to Sardinia-Piedmont, working on Italian Unification.

Really? Wouldn't the whole thing mostly sound like gibberish unless you had the game in front of you? I know I had to have the game open to understand Paradox's manual. Too much to take in.

No, in fact not. Even though there are some things I did and do not understand it covers most things in the game and gives you a nice overview.

I did this also... between Memnon's guide, Rafiki's FAQ and site, I picked up most stuff. Though in a game this complicated one must play to really understand (hence my experience with Texas!).

It also helped to have a background with HOI.

Russia. No navy, no colonies. For some odd reason max tariffs worked for the entire game (ended a democracy, no communist in sight). Got stuck with a never ending war against the UK. They'd send in 10 divisions at Sevastopol, get slaughtered (outnumbered 10 to 1 locally), build new divisions and ship those in. The revolts due to war exhaustion made me quit and reload I'm sorry to say.
