My nation, the United States of America.

Surprisingly, it took me some time to be overwhelmed.

Perhaps it was because I didn't really bother to utilize half of the game, such as the industries and factories.

Same here when I played America in the later scenario ;) I know America played a mostly isolationist role during this time period but...I don't know, once I claimed one colony, I had to claim another...and another...and then I was going to war with Russia and Prussia for their colonies, and...

After I learned the interface, I started with Paraguay, then Argentina, then Switzerland and now Krakow. All of the were very succesful and peaceful GCs, except for Argentina with which I couldn't reach all my potential due to basic resources crisis.

Another vote for Portugal - a nicely populous country with a decent starting position: just right for learning Vicky economics and colonisation, with some minor African nations to practice warmongering on. And then I got cocky and declared colonial war on France and, um, looked at the long blue columns filtering down from the north as a learning experience.

I read them, too. It is a great way to kill some time at work.

Got any good advice for the Prussian economy? I just started my first game with Prussia. Not my first one overall, just my first with Prussia. My economy is lagging. Building lots of railroads and a little colonizing but not making much money. Played many times with US and France and never had a problem with making lots and lots of money.

I don't think anybody has yet mentioned my first country...

Texas!

I tried it in order to learn the economy.

However, I didn't know I would start the game at war (shoulda' figured!) and so it quick became a tutorial in warfare. I did all right until the Mexican armies introduced me to the concept of manpower, and schooled me in the fact that I didn't have any.

And I learned some about the economy, too... Learned the right levers to push and pull, until I backed the machine into the Mississippi River. Perhaps that's because I had transfered all of my POPs into the army.

First REAL game was Prussia -- come see the AAR!

I chose Austria for my first game. Made a few modest accomplishments, mainly winning the 1866 war with Prussia and reclaiming Silesia, stopping the Italian Unification, and adding Bosnia and Serbia to the Empire.

I chose Austria because I felt that it had a strong starting position, interesting events, and little pressure to expand. I had plenty of resources for industrialization (Especially after I got Silesia back) and a large enough population.

My first real game was with Brazil (sure, with the aid of the famous guide-for-beginners) and my first unaided game was with Sweden: ranked #2 behind - ages behind, actually - UK in the 1900s, I have up soon after, when Russia DoWed me and started eating Skandinavia alive

All those games on normal/normal.
