The Paradox "universe" is a given, we're looking at other venues, you can always fall back on the safe core of Paradox games
There was also some request for non-WW2 era which is why I suggested Kerbal Space Program for example.
Personally I've been lately looking at some Let's Play's for Darkest Hour, there'll be features making a re-appearance in HoI4, like tech-teams.
Ah ok, I missed the part in the OP that said NOT PDSWe all already know Paradox games are great and really deep in strategy (recent ones at least). There was no need to mention them at all.

The other games in the series are 'Steam and Iron' which is the tactical battle engine in 'Rule the Waves'.
RTW is a labor of love produced basically by one guy, so I wouldn't expect a graphics overhaul.
I do think you'd like it if you tried it, but I did tell you the graphics were, um, 'dated'.

What now? I guess I will also go sea-lion and the US invasion but then I'll have to turn to another game. Maybe I'll continue my Brandenburg game of EU IV
Gary Grigsby's War in the East is indeed very very detailed, but most of the things are automated. You can micro manage or even nano manage and read pages of pages of statistics if you want to, but you can also just move your land units and automate your planes.

ive been tempted by those a few times, but £60 is not "oh ill give it a go" price range. especially with Steam now doing refunds
I currently play Guild Wars 2 : HoT. Afaik you can now play the base game for free. You can play it as a solo RPG game, with exploration and quests. You also have all the regular group activities : events, dungeons, PvP and WvW.

last time i looked at it, it -wasnt- on steam, so i meant i didnt want to buy it from Atomic or whoever and not be able to get it refunded. been a while since i looked for it, apologies for confusion re steam

I agree it's quite expensive, but still cheaper than other games with many expansions to make them work. Since 2010, they have continuously made many huge patches for War in the East equivalent in size to expansions (not in new features though), and for free. I would call that very good follow-up customer service.

I want to thank you for recommending Rule the Waves! I would have never heard of it if not for this thread, and I have been playing it regularly the past few days. LOVE IT! The mechanics mixed with the randomization makes this sim so enjoyable. The naval arms race that happens is great. Playing a CSA campaign, I get word from my spies that France has laid down a fast battlecruiser with little to no armor and nine 14in guns. I counter it by creating a battlecruiser that can match speed and has some armor with twelve 12in guns. I was quite pleased when the two ships met in the Caribbean 3 years later and CSA BC Richmond sank French BC Tourville after hours of trading fire. Awesome stuff
I'm working on a custom nation for Byzantium now with, I hope, more to come. And there are some others over on the NWS website.
Just finished a game as the USA (a custom version that involved the CSA and Spain). Whipped the rebels in 3 wars in a row, took Cuba and Puerto Rico and Panama too. By the last war they had 1 BB and a handful of destroyers left so I was, ah, cruising to victory.

War in the East is pretty neat. Rather daunting, but lots of fun if you like HOI3. And yes, you do have the option of how much you want to micro-manage things.
I like the turn-based setup a lot better than I like HOI's semi-real-time system, too. I just don't feel it works too well in a grand strategy wargame with hundreds of brigades.

Yeah, watch a play through and start with smaller scenarios and it's do-able to learn it quickly. The depth is stil there and reveals itself nicely as one plays along.
That's another thing it's got going for it: it's got all these scenarios of increasing difficulty and scope. I really, really wish HOI4 would have a small practice scenario or two.
