I know there's been talk about what to read and what to watch, but (other than HoI3) any suggestions on something reasonably meaty to play in the meantime? Everything seems to be RTS (I mean real RTS-zerg-rush, not PDX strategy/RTS) or Panzer General (nice, but typically the only real enemy is the clock), but then maybe I haven't looked hard enough. I'm hoping someone knows a title from the vast number out there that is almost HoI, and good, since my guess is we have a good six months to wait.

Agario.

It is the most addictive game I have ever played. Do not play it if you have an addictive personality. You'll never stop, you'll slowly lose your life, your job and wife and ultimately your soul.

I personaly simply keep playing HoI III and Victoria II and getting more and more into Europa Universalis IV. For me there isnt really anything compareable to those 3 Paradox Franchises, especially not compareable to Hearts of Iron III which i simply adore.

Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron, Victoria and Crusader Kings are grand strategy games, not realtime strategy games. Maybe you have better luck in that genre rather than RTS.

I'm looking forward to the Cossacks, and have MGS V sitting on my shelf which I'm looking forward to tearing into as well. However, if you're looking for something like HoI, I'm afraid the closest I've found is HoI. The only other WW2 strategy game I've ever really enjoyed was Clash of Steel, of early 1990s vintage (and I might be looking back through rose tinted glasses, and it was only European Theatre). I've had Strategic Command 2 is pretty good, but haven't got around to it.

I've had quite a lot of fun playing the free-to-play game War Thunder, the tanks specifically, now I'm at the point where it feels more of a grind so I've stopped. But playing it has given some insight in how the different tanks and tank destroyers work... and the importance of sloped Russian armor and speed for maneuvering :)

This knowledge will hopefully be somewhat transferable to HoI4, but I doubt it, perhaps someone will do a large matrix with optimal variation builds and research paths a few weeks post-launch :) On the other hand I hope that won't be possible, since then the game would get boring because everyone would be doing the same. It'll be interesting to see how much difference boosting a level on one stat really does, with the effect on production and in the battle.

Why aren't you on Fallout 4? Explore the post-WW3 nuclear wasteland. >_>

No, really, we should all be playing Fallout 4. :p Besides' it is good to play something very different from HoI, so that when you do tuck into HoI4 you'll be fresh off the RPG train and onto the WW2 train, ready to do marathon sessions without being burnt out. :)

Gary Grigsby's War in the East is a IGOUGO WW2 wargame with a really huge scope. Weekly turns and brigade/division sized troops on all the Eastern front, all equipments accounted in incredible details (too much some would say) and supply system based mainly on railways and trucks for the last kilometres between rail and troops.

Days and weeks to finish a single game should occupy your leisure time until HOI4 is released. That is if you can withdraw from WITE after trying it.

Apparantly he pissed off someone/somepeople in another thread and is now they're disagreeing with (literally) all his posts.

As for what game to play, I'd recommend not playing another WW2 strategy game, so HOI4 and it's theme feels more 'fresh'. I'm currently playing Fallout 4 like everyone else, as well as a bit of Mount and Blade: Warband and Victoria 2 HPM on the side. And yeah, Agario is addicting as hell.

Avoiding Fallout 4 lik like the plague. Soooooo want to, but thats a time rabbit hole that I objectively don;t need. Been trying out different mods for HOI3 trying to get my head back in the game after a long absence.

Ok. In that case I can also recommend Kerbal Space Program for those who haven't tried it. I spent about a month on it, really teaches you about orbital mechanics and the exponential rocket equation (the more fuel you have the more fuel you need to carry to lift the other fuel). The feeling you got when first landing on the Mun was incredibly satisfying :) It's been a while since I played it but I recall it successfully gave that sense of wonder and awe, bordering on loneliness when in space, since I kept thinking back to how it must have been in the 1960's when this was done for real - very immersive.

Other than that I'd say EUIV or Vic 2

That guy spoke the truth, I went to see what the hell it was and I wasted 4 hours on it.

Its so true. I never believed it either but when an ex gf of mine showed me the game, I was hooked. I think she's done it on purpose so that I could fail at life while playing Agario for hours. Last time I played agario I did it for 3 hours straight, which is a bit scary and amusing at the same time. But it just feels so good when you eat somebody smaller than you.

Apparantly he pissed off someone/somepeople in another thread and is now they're disagreeing with (literally) all his posts.
