Okay. Now I'm pissed off. I was playing as Italy, CORE v .8, 1.06. It's late 1939/1940. I join the Axis war effort after seeing that the south of France is very lightly defended. Okay... so I make major headway. By major I'm talking about stretching along the Med coast to the Spanish border [Nationalist, no thanks to me < sarcasm, ] and extending into the interior about two provinces deep. So I hold this line and then take Northern Africa. The Germany decides to Vichy. AND I LOSE ALL OF MY PROVINCES THAT I TOOK. I think there should be something were I can refuse to give it back. I took it, and I wanna keep it.

I know I made a mistake joining the Axis. I mean what good is it, if Germany gets to decide what playgrounds I get to play on?

If we managed to come up with a solution it would have to have some sort of effect on the German-Italian relations if Italy did not give in to the German wishes on the Vichy issue. Something like: sleep all resource/tech event transfers in the future. maybe a reduced willingness to send exp. to Italy(yes that can be modded now)

This goes back to HoI 1.00 and how to model Vichy when Axis minor nations go down an ahistorical path. Basically from a design point of view you have two options, disable Vichy completely if somebody "misbehaves" or let it happen historically and screw whoever made ahistorical gains. The same applies to for example the Bitter Peace where as an Axis minor nation you end up handing over all or most of your gains to Germany when the event triggers.

Bottom line you've got a couple of paths to pick from when playing an Axis minor:

• Sleep the events that you will end up hating because Germany strips your conquests from you
• Accept that any ahistorical gains will be handed over to Germany as per the spheres of interest set out in the Tri-partite Pact
• Simply avoid infringing on German interests, ie go conquer Malta, Egypt, Syria etc instead of attacking France

Yep, but I understand. I love the game, and when it's not going my way I get frustrated, and when I feel cheated I get maaaaaaad!!!

I havent played with Italy yet so I havent encountered the problem you describe. I do however feel your pain, I would have been furious too. I wonder how difficult it would be to program in the next patch; that if Italy have conquered any french provinces and the Germans choose to Vichy, Italy get one or 2 fixed provinces. Preferable the closest to Italy in south of France. If Italy havent conquered any french provinces things runs as normal.

Anyway, it seems to me there has to be some sort of modification regarding this, Germany would never have forced Italy to hand back so much territory if Italy had conquered so much. Hitler, despite their many disagreements, had too much personal respect for Mussolini (this was not mutual). And had Italy preformed well at the begining of the war, I can't immagine Hitler denying Italy territory, at least not without compensating it elsewhere.

You can take parts of France if you want, but you MUST get Vichy before the germans take Paris. If you take Vichy, then the Vichy event doesn't fire. Sometimes its a bit of effort, but if you know you need it from the start you can ususally make it.

Also, If you invade Russia, make sure you take Stalingrad AND Moscow, or else you lose all your territory to the Bitter Peace event (unless you want to change that so you don't, which can be done)

Yeah sometimes I just dont attack because I wont gain anything. One thing you can do is when the Germans begin their offensive in the West, you can start demanding your territory from France. This will give you Corsica, Tunisia and the eastern most coastal territory [Toulon maybe?]. Anyways, I did that, so I have that much...

Yes. That was the idea in my 104 game in my AAR. The idea was to actually take Paris from the south, but I didnt quite make it. Now that the AI is so great, there is a real chance that the Italians can punch through and take Paris, but dont reload while doing it!

Well, I have my own anger story. (sorry, but I have to vent, it has been bottled up for too long. Acknowledgement is the first step )

Basically, I was Romania, (1.04 mind you), and I had taken the Balkins before joining Germany in their war. Soon, I had taken Turkey, and began to drive the allies out of the Middle East/ Africa. Then came the Russian invasion. I saw the little message on the bottom of the screen, and so I allocated a HUGe force to take care of the Sovjets. I started killing them, and once I destroyed their first defense, they had nothing to hang on to. BUT I had to keep all my armies at the front lines, and I could keep any forces to watch the flanks. Basically, I had to stay with Germany's pace. Soon, I reached Stalingrad, and even then, they couldnt stop me, I plowed through them so fast, but then, Germany got an event. The infamous 'Bitter Peace'. ARGHHHH!!!! I lost everything! I was so mad, that I do believe my neighbors could hear me. I was so mad, I shut down my computer for at least a day, and deleted the save file. But, I cant stay mad forever, and now I am playing HOI more than ever.

Wouldn't it be relatively simple to script a new Vichy event for Italy, asking if you want to hand over your occupied territory to a new Vichy Regime, or keep it, or whatever... regardless of how much it is. The same could be done in the east in regards to the Bitter Peace events...
