I sent out a large fleet of 8 CV-8's into the english channel with 24 destroyers, and promptly got my ass handed to me

i was 1 tech behind the current year in carrier

I lost all but 2 carriers and 2 destroyers :( to a 10 ship smaller american fleet that had some light cruisers maybe a heavy cruiser and some misc. DD's

should i be doing a different mix for warship fleets?

If you met land based air power, well, it isn't that surprising. Also, the English Channel is a rather restricted area for CVs to operate in - they are probably quite vulnerable to attack by enemy surface sleets, especially as you had no surface units in your group, basically (no cruisers, etc).

It can also depend on what other related techs you have researched. The Americans may have researched the Purpose Built CAG techs, giving them a bonus in organisation and morale, or they may have better Naval Doctrines, or a fleet leader with a very high skill level. All of these factors come into play. As Historyman mentioned, the US fleet may have closed to within gun range, which means they could have picked you off with light and heavy cruisers without you being able to effectively fight back.

You should aim to have at least a heavy cruiser(s) supporting your CV fleet. Fast battleships are handy as well, just in case you are surprised at night and in bad weather against a surface combat fleet. Light cruisers also come in handy to help against air attack. A good mix of units is usually desirable. Check the stats of each type of ship in your fleets though, sometimes the highest model number is not always the best suited for a particular job. Some DDs are better for ASW and others for battle fleets. The best way to find out is to experiment, although a good rule of thumb is 2-3 escort ships to every capital ship.

I'm sure there are more experienced naval players out there who can give more specific advice :p

well i built the DD's with the Fleet Destroyer add on figuring that would help them against light cruisers and such.

Only reason i didnt build cruisers, and light cruisers, and heavy cruisers is because the higher tech ones take forever to build, Heavy cruisers take 700+ days to build.

Cruisers take 500?ish

light cruisers for the oldest ones is like 350 days to build and its worse than a version 9 destroyer i believe...

The submarine warfare etc went very well for me, along with the auxiliary raider ships, once most of those sub wolf packs had died off (after 5 years of solid service) I took the very experienced admirals (5+ skill on like 6 of them), and put the best on that fleet.

Guess ill have to figure out what works best for capital ship mix with carriers.

Germany 1939-

well i started a new game and I was trying to do an early sealion invasion, and i had 3 transport to do it with .

i sent my entire navy to shore bombard in support, shore bombardment lasted about an hour before the entire british navy showed up, or a big chunk of it. during the naval battle my 3 divisions lost the coastal assault on 1 division :(

BUT IT WAS WORTH IT WOW :)

on the entrance to the english channel near london, I lost all my battleships and heavy cruisers and all but 6 destroyers and a few cruisers.

during the 24 hour long first battle, i killed 2 battleships , 1 cv, a bunch of cruisers. in exchange for all my battleships.

during the next 24 hour battle my german fleet with no battleships at all but now tactical bombers doing emergency fleet interdiction flights over the channel along with CAS managed to sink another carrier, 2 or 3 more battleships and what must have been 8 more cruisers and about the same in destroyers. all while this final battle was occurring, my fleet never retreated the British broke and ran! The expense was high in its own way though, My entire Tactical Bomber air force and CAS air Fleet were wiped out entirely!

Not a single tactical bomber or CAS made it out alive, i set them to never retreat and to continue doing fleet attacks no matter what, they flew till the last plane crashed into a capital ship in triumph.

I have never gotten that lucky in a fleet fight where i was so outclassed before.

I was pretty much like this afterwards

I still couldnt do sea lion though, britain had air superiority over the mainland and i lost 2 transports in the amazing sea battle.

I have 4 cruisers / light cruisers left now with 6 destroyers, and i can officially say i have yet to see the british fleet at sea a year later. I dont know if i sank so much of it they arent sending it out anymore or what, but I have been sailing my little fleet through the english channel with nothing coming out to chase.
reas

Sealion, strategically a failure? Tactically a tremendous success. Now to increase my submarine production to take advantage of this occurance.

very fun.

this is my 4th play through of CORE 0.4 and im loving every moment of it.

to protect my mainland of france from british/american bombers etc i built 30 radars and spread air bases in every province and radars every other coastal province for the bonus. Worked very well my interceptors are holding up very well against the air attacks.

and just to add-

Russia is also sorta a roll over for some reason on normal difficulty, not sure why Russia is so easy to defeat and completely push back beyond Moscow. I guess i should start playing on HARD difficulty, but later game i dislike that -10 to ground combat when everyone finalyl catches up in infantry techs.
