In my current game as a count, my ducal liege died unexpectedly maybe a week after I fabricated a strong claim on his two-county duchy. His heir is a 4-year-old boy for whom I am currently both the chancellor and regent. I would have expected more out of being the regent, but unless I'm missing something, it seems like regency is pretty much a nominal title and doesn't really do anything for me apart from giving me a base 167% plot power if I decide to try to assassinate the kid.

If I kill him and his baby sister, I expect the title to pass to the emperor, in which case I figure I'm SOL since I don't want to declare war on the entire empire for this backwater duchy. Is there any way to just declare myself duke while I'm the regent? If I kill toddler duke and his baby sister, am I at all likely to receive the ducal title from the emperor due to my strong claim and since I am otherwise the only landholder in the duchy? I've considered declaring war to press my claim, but when I mouse over the button the game informs me that members of my court might be executed; I'm assuming this is because I'm the regent/chancellor and therefore part of the ducal court and the war would end before it started with my head on a pike. I'd just save-scum to try out my options, but this is an Ironman game, so any advice from more experienced players would be appreciated before proceeding.

Judging by the wiki, it sounds like there are certain events that let you do a variety of things as regent, but you're at the mercy of the RNG. I'm curious about this myself, however, and I hope someone who's actually done this can offer their experience.

Love him and cherish him, protect him with your own life.

lol jk

Supposedly there's an event chain where you can usurp your underage liege's title, it involves declaring them insane and locking them in a tower or something but it's never fired for me. You can sometimes get a random event that lowers crown authority but that's mostly useful for king lieges and up. You can steal money from his treasury or donate it. There've been a few times I've taken county level titles from my liege but I dunno what makes it fire. And of course there's an event chain where you try to kill your liege 5 times with a 25% (?) chance of succeeding each time, if you fail you're jailed and go insane. If you succeed he dies, the events make it sound like you'd have a chance to take his title but you don't. It just passes on to the next heir. You also get a plot power boost so fabricating a claim on his title might be a good idea.

Sure is a nice toddler you've got there. Be a shame if something... happened to it.

But in all seriousness, I've never gotten that event either. Is it just really uncommon or am I missing some requirement is what I'd like to know.

The chance for it to happen might increse with how less you like each other.

But I'm not sure.

Just declare war. As a landed councillor you don't have to be afraid because you will leave his court immediately after declaring war.

It would be truly tragic if said toddler were to die of a mysterious case of pillow to the face, and the little girl was to be married to your son so that the title could pass onto your dynasty next generation.

Truly tragic...

As regent, I have found that the most useful thing to do is that you can control a child's education and marry the ruler to your courtiers. In Cornwall, I turned England to Breton and betrothed the queen to my son that way. The events are rare, and it might help being ambitious.

You can also push through any faction demand while regent, though I don't know about a faction asking to remove him.Worth a try if you want to declare war anyway.

In my current game, as regent to the Queen of Lombardy, I was quite happy siphoning off money every few months....until she suddenly ran out of dynastic heirs, and to my surprise, I found myself heir....I didn't even need to start a plot, as the "unfortunate accident on the roof" event triggered within a few days.

In my experience, only AI regents are allowed to pull off shenanigans that wouldn't normally be possible otherwise. As a human all you really get out of the deal is very high plot power if you need your ward dead.

I was not aware that Philippe VI had murdered anyone to reach the throne of France... o_O

He possibly means Philippe V who succeeded after the 5 day reign of Jean I the posthumous and invoked Salic law to prevent Jean's sister Jeanne from succeeding to France and the possibility of illegitimacy to prevent her succeeding to Navarre. Jeanne II did get the Navarrese crown after the death of Charles IV since Philip VI was not descended from Jeanne I of Navarre
