I'm wondering what the heck minelayers and minesweepers do. It doesn't seem like they'd be worth the money they cost as attachments. Are submarines worth building?

I usually build as many Battleships with Destoryers as I can afford. Anyone have a better idea, or am I on the right track?

I don't think Minelayers and Minesweepers work at the moment. Submarines are useful, just not very practical given the games lack of effective anti shipping warfare. Cruisers and Battlerships are the way to go.

it would be awesome if minelayers worked, but guess we'll have to wait for a patch

ML and MS add a little org and size but that is about it.

SS get creamed, even with support. The subs do damage but don't expect them to come back from large battles. They are nice to have so that you can cover more sea lanes, and if a battle ensues, send in a large BB-CA fleet.

Heavy crusiers are better than BBs, but BBs are the only ship with working shore bombardment.

In terms of navies, I usually play as countries with little to no naval power at the outset (Prussia, Austria, etc). They don't even have steamer technology. As a result, I never try to build anything until I get ironclads, and only then if there'll be a significant difference between my new navy and one of my oppoents. Otherwise, I'll just build transports to fight colonial wars, and make sure I can invade by land anywhere I need to go.

I do the same thing as Memnon. Except I don't even build ships until Submarines and Light Cruisers at least. The cost prior in terms of artillery and woodenships/steamers is just to to steep and to time consuming to continually modernize your navy to an effective level.

Hmm, I try not to build untl steel ships as well. Does not work in some games. If I have colonies, I kinda needm ore han 3 clipper trans to support them when the evil social commy amiricans and WC-desiring brits come after me :)

bb or ca? both! hah! oh, and all cl get tp in my fleet.

Early navy - a couple of Man o Wars just in case, don't run afoul of the damn British.

Late navy - BB as close support, Dreads and Heavy Cruisers for high seas fleet. Throw in a few steamer transports along the way and a few subs for good measure.

Result - Watching your awesome navy chip down that huge but weak British navy is quite fun. I declare war on them for that purpose only sometimes

Boy I'll say, in the Crimean war, my fleet of 72 Russian ships, about 40 Man of wars and 30 frigates came up against just 4 French Iron Clads. I lost every ship and didn't even destroy one of theirs.

Doh, no wonder I couldn't sink the Royal Navy as Germany, I build 100 battleships and 100 or so light cruisers and lost to his 20 or so heavy ones.

I'm gonna load that game, build 200 DNs and 200 heavies and go knock on the gates on London...

The techs matter a lot too. In Chesepeake Bay, I had 12 IC and 12 MON. USA had 40+ FR and 20+ MW and 2 IC. I lost. Badly.

I had only basic naval techs, bare minimum to get Steel Steamers. USA had more techs.

Has anyone noticed, that, in 1.03b, the AI goes all-out naval research? Even Neth, Bel, etc. have massive naval tech, more naval than commerce or ind or (thank heavens they don't) army.

edit: Russia will get Army tho. They seem to stop on naval after Crimean War and eventually get Tanks in early 1900's. Is ok, just a note.
