So I just played China for the first time (v 1.04), and realised my poor-class POPs were having great difficulty meeting their subsistence and everyday needs. Looking on the Vicky Wiki I realised that my aristocrats were consuming far more than their fair-share of national income, so decided to tax them to oblivion at 100% and wipe them out.

The % of aristocrats in my country dropped from 3% to 0.2% after some years, and I noticed an improvement in the tax base of my poor POPs, as well as a halt in emigration. My farmers, labourers, soldiers etc. were now earning enough income to flourish.

But I noticed that the amount of prestige I earnt per year crashed. I was getting perhaps 2-3 prestige per year... now I'm only earning 1 prestige every couple of years.

Do other POPs provide prestige, such as officers and capitalists? I haven't been able to find any information on how prestige-earning is calculated. And are there other ways of earning prestige besides culture tech, claiming colonies and random events?

I'm not a game mechanics guru so I won't rule out the possibility of aristocrats generating prestige. But, a more plausible explanation would be that you decreased your defence expenditure. That I know for sure influences yearly prestige gain.

I must say I have never heard that POPs earn prestige. Are you sure the higher prestige earning before didn't come from higher military spending, events or something other "normal" explanation?

It would be a new game concept to me, also. But then - that's nothing outrageous at this juncture! :eek:o

I always kept my defence expenditure at max as every prestige point is valuable as an unciv China.

My guess is that aristocrats do provide prestige, like clerks and clergy provide research points, officers leadership points, etc. I am earning virtually zilch prestige, even though I have leadership points and manpower pouring out of my ears after an officer/soldier recruitment binge.

Didn't they have pop-culture celebrities during the Victorian era? Maybe there could be another class of POP that is an upgrade from the aristocrats (triggered by events maybe). I rich daughter, like Paris Hilton for example, which raises the prestige accumulation rate of a nation. Wait, scratch that. Well, they could at least lower the consciousness of the poor class, I guess. Then again, the game predates rap & hip-hop, oh well, nevermind.

Great idea, except Paris Hilton would LOWER prestige and pop militancy (because shes so darn stupid and funny in that).

Not to mention lower consciousness and literacy.

If there were such POP strata I think luxury goods factories would become as profitable as they were in 1.02 (or was it 1.01?) patch.

I could be wrong, but I thought that when they divied up pop income each strata gets 1/3 of the wealth so if you wipe out the rich folk, then the other two stratas get to divvy up the rich folks wealth as well. I have nothing to back this up with, but I think I read an AAR where this was explained.

From what I understand, each pop gains income based on a certain formula specific to each type.

ie, laborers and farmers earn less than crafstmen and clerks.

So I don't think it would be divvied up in quite that way...

exactly farmers earn the same as craftsmen, clerks earn more.

the tier go

slaves (no income)

farmers, labourers, craftsmen

clerks, soldier (I think), clergy

upper crust are aristos, officers, and capis

Each of the estates gets a share of the pie, maybe the craftsmen get more of the poor pie then the farmers and labourers, but I doubt it.

This is why the first capi you make always makes MONEY, because the upper crust is so small.
