Oke sorry if this is a dumb question, but may I ask how much cpu cores each paradox game supports.

I am choosing a new cpu and this is an important factor.

I can't speak to other games, but I typically find that Stellaris pegs one core hard, while the others are barely doing anything. It's generally preferable to have faster single cores vs. more cores (i.e. fast dual or quad core vs. slower hex or octo core) for probably 99% of games on the market.

As many as you have AFAIK.

At least those that use the Clausewitch engine which are their own games. CK2, EU4, HOI, Stellaris.
Actually any cores over 4 won't really contribute much. (Though having other programs using other cores of course helps.)
PDS games do utilise multiple cores, but due to the way the games work there's many things which can't be multithreaded and as such the game will work one of the cores much harder than the other ones. Doesn't mean it doesn't use the other ones though (but as mentioned over 4 and you don't really gain anything per extra core).

There was an excellent post about this by a PDS employee a while ago (it was what I summarised above). I'll try and see whether I can find it now.

Choosing the CPU (or any other component) for a game, series/franchise or the games of a developer is a bad idea.

There are multiple reasons why you'd need a good CPU for Pdox games (especially if you multi-task while playing their games), but they generally don't have high requirements. You'd probably be good to go with a mid-level CPU and will experience slightly better performance with a beefy one. I also use plenty mods and because they add to the load that is deemed enough for vanilla, it really has helped to have a quad core CPU (mid-high level). My latest experience was with Cities Skyline, though. The processing stays fairly low, but the more mods I use, the more RAM it required (very interesting, I've never seen any app before pushing the memory requirements that high before). Having a fast setup (CPU - motherboard - RAM) also helps in these cases.

I use a i5-7600K (Not overclocked), and it seems like overkill. Even modded CK2 Runs blazing fast (1 month in 1-2 seconds). No need for expensive i7s on pretty much any game.
