Obvious story spoilers ahead...

Martin "Major" Gavilan is a descendant of the minor noble House Gavilan, originally hailing from the central Rimward Periphery. His parents relocated to the Heliat system in the Aurigan Reach in order to oversee expansions of the Gavilan Technology Conglomerate just a few years prior to the birth of their first-born son.

Growing up in the Reach, and with both familial and cultural ties to the Aurigan Coalition, Martin eagerly embraced their staunch traditions and values. However, shortly after his 16th birthday he was swiftly and summarily exiled by his family for crimes he claims he did not commit. Having trained all of his life to become a MechWarrior, he made a mockery of Gavilan security systems when he stole away in the middle of the night piloting the fully-armed GTC Blackjack "Void Phoenix".

Armed with just the clothes on his back, his natural wit, and with Void Phoenix under his command, he was none-the-less able to join up with the Aurigan Coalition military on Coromodir, where he had initially trained under Raju "Mastiff" Montgomery and had made good friends during his time at war college. Despite the marks of shame inflicted upon his honor by his family, Martin quickly attained the rank of Major after leading several highly successful sorties against pirate clans and bandit camps in the furthest reaches of the Aurigan Coalition.

His luck eventually ran out, and his unit, the 71st Aurigan Lancers, was caught in a blistering cross-fire by no less than 5 pirate clans that had united to claim the bounty on the Major. Fortunately, Mastiff was on patrol nearby and was able to come to the Lancer's rescue, but despite the valiant effort of his team Martin was the only survivor. Recognizing how far his former student had come, Mastiff offered him a position in the royal bodyguard, and allowed him to keep his callsign in honor of his fallen comrades.

Three years after The Directorate took control of Coromodir, Major now leads the mercenary unit Echo Mirage, intent on seeking bloody revenge against the callous usurpers who betrayed the only family he had left...

One thing to note is that these decisions effectively allocate the same experience you would get from doing four half skull missions. Given how easily that can be made up, and how easy those half skull missions are, it is probably completely fine to base one's decision solely on roleplaying value. Moreover, in fairly short order, you are going to want to boost all your stats to at least four anyway, so in the end making decisions here for the stats they give you is all the more ill advised. There may indeed be significant variations in how the RPG side of the game plays out based on your decisions here.

I was thinking Canopus, exile and freelancer. Going for something overtly dark and tragic feels a bit pat and I'm curious about what a sixteen year old could have done to warrant exile. I also like that the family is still presumably alive even if we're not on speaking terms. Maybe it can be an unspoken motivation/goal to gather enough men and resources to go and kick the door down and take over as a form of retirement.

Absolutely. I have no intention of even paying attention to the stat boosts. I'll perhaps let the stats dictate my playstyle a bit once out of CG, but otherwise? Going for what I think is the most interesting story.

The other thing that your choices will affect are the events and dialogue options you're given in the game. Certain tags are generated by your background choices, and will have various events pop up only for those particular choices you made, and will have different results for you later on. There will undoubtedly be certain missions that will pop up only for certain backgrounds....for example, as a pirate you might get a bounty hunter after you later on, and that's only if you chose life as a pirate.

Deep Periphery, Betrayed or maybe struck out on own. Currently undecided on that - became an inner sphere Merc. Fits the fiction I am writing if not to a T then close enough.

Which reminds me I need to get back to that....

I'm going to use the same name I did for my Dragonfall character, which is entirely fair. This is the quick whipped-up bits here.

Name: Valia deLune
Callsign: 'Vixen'
Outfit Name: Darkmoon Company

Origin: Magistracy of Canopus
16th Birthday: Exiled (+1 Gunnery, +1 Tactics)
Occupation: Merchant Guard (+1 Piloting)

The deLune family left the Magistracy, ostensibly for political reasons, and settled on Heliat in a corner of the Aurigan Coalition. However, some time after proving their valor in defense of the world the High Lord granted Alan deLune with the title of Baron and rule over the planet. Politics were never easy, as people of the Aurigan Reach were slow to trust an outsider, especially House Espinosa. Nevertheless, the deLune family was respected locally for keeping a fair rule and actually caring about common folk.

Valia was always a troublemaker, a dissenter to the family. She favored more decisive actions, and studied economics and the ways to make peace profitable rather than truly apply herself to learning to be a MechWarrior. Even tutelage under Sir Raju Montgomery served more as a distraction, though she pushed herself to excel. Despite that, trouble would be coming and it would be her doing.

One night, Valia was in a heated argument with an old friend of the family and the argument lasted long into the night. When morning came only one was alive, and the other was gone along with the ancestral BattleMech. Little is known of what happened to her, but she signed on with the company 'Aliandros Starscapes' as a hired guard for a trade route out of Federated Sun space to Coromodir. She ran again into Sir Montgomery, who now offered a change of pace and prestige of joining the Royal Guard. After a time reflecting on her life, and realizing piloting a BattleMech was still coming easily to her, Valia opted to join and soon rose to a position of prestige despite her dishonor with her family. So it was, on the day Lady Kamea Arano was to ascend the throne, she was picked for the honor guard to escort her in a purely ceremonial affair.

This day is where Valia deLune steps out of the shadows and into the light, despite all her early desires to avoid it. This day is when she finds what destiny has set in her path.

Thanks. But darn! He went Deep Periph too. Anyone know if the other origins unlock other options in the third stage? Or if all options are the same no matter which origin?

I think all options are the same.

Agreed. Looks like you get the same choices; where are you from, what happened to you at the age of 16, and what happened next, kind of deal.

We've seen three different primary origins; Cohh went Deep Periphery, Bombadil went with Federated Suns, and Phil eventually chose Magistracy of Canopus after someone pointed out that Cohh chose Deep Periphery in his playthrough.

Cohh: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/244283036
Bombadil: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/244487616
Phil: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/246023491

Conn O'Dea will be:

Steiner family background: Conn's grandparents left Summer in the Isle of Skye due to...something. Or his great-grandfather served in the 17th Skye Rangers but became disillusioned and moved out to the Periphery with his dependants.

Struck out on his own: mainly because it's different. Most of the others have the family die tragically. I like the idea that they are still there, he's just too stubborn to go back and accept his responsibilities as heir.

After that, probably the Wanderer one (whatever it was called). Like Conn was the star of one of those adventure series from the 90s, "walking the earth" and righting wrongs. But the series was too expensive so in the finale the hero goes home to serve the High Lady etc. :D

Got it. Bomba did Fed Suns, and no other options like Comguard. I remember one of the posts a while back showing a complicated tree of selections with Comstar as an option - so was hoping there'd be others.

So there we go!

Steiner - Betrayed - and either Freelancer or Merchant Guard for me!

My first play through will be:
  • Marik
  • Commoner (if only that were actually an option)
  • Struck out on my own (+1 Piloting & Tactics)
  • Freelancer (+1 Tactics) or possibly Guard (+1 Piloting)
With the exception of Lyran origin, I plan to eventually attempt as many combinations of all the different options as possible.

That's one way of putting it. Another would to be calling you a second-generation immigrant, so your heritage may still be important to you.

That's up to the player.

Congrats, your family went bankrupt. This background gives +1 Guts and +1 Tactics.

You have the addition option of picking 1 of the following:

Pirate: +1 Guts
Inner Sphere Mecenary: +1 tactics
Frontier Freelancer (basicly a merc but solo): +1 tactics

So you can start with +2 guts +1 tactics or +1 Guts and +2 tactics.

I'm thinking of going with the same type of background since I also like the guts and tactics skills.
