I do like to play as France, as Bavaria (in order to form "South Germany" in 1866, against the Prusso-german Imperial State :D ), Netherlands, Two Sicilies and the Confederate States of America are quite fun too.

I've never played as the UK, but it seems like it could be an excellent campaign- very rich in history. It would no doubt include many decisions for the player and involve events occuring all over the globe.

If it seems as though it is not enough of a challege, can't one be challeged on "very hard" difficulty setting. I'm brand new to Victoria- and I really hope that playing as Great Britain can be rewarding. As I have said- I'm new and have yet to play, but my guess is that playing as the UK must involve a great deal of micro-management. With so many decisions to make, there must some challege. Would an experienced player please offer me an opinion on playing as the UK? Thanks
Firstly, to play the UK you have to be a moderately experienced player, otherwise the amount of management required will do your head in. So cut your teeth on a few smaller nations first.

IMO there are two ways to play the UK:

1. Roleplay. Marvel in the delight of being the world's greatest ever empire whilst you, a Palmerston / Disraeli / Gladstone / Salisbury extraordinaire, guide it to its glorious destiny, leaving all others in your wake.

2. Aggressive. Involve yourself in all the world's affairs and fulfil Cecil Rhodes' dream of ruling the entire world. Politely inform the US it's the 42nd parallel or it's war. Make it clear to the Prussians that they'll unite Germany over your dead body (and plenty of theirs). Crimean War? How about the vivisection of all Russia! French West Africa - not bloody likely! And as for China, it had better get used to opium and cricket....

I just loaded up the OE for my first game in a long time, and my first 1.04 game--I like the "alternate history" aspect of making them an industrial power. (Spain and some Italy-founding state are close seconds.) Industrializing Prussia or France, while fun, is missing that extra bit of fantasy.

On the other hand, I'm not very good at the game and think I'm about to be owned. I logged on to see if my pops are really that low with the new patch

I don't find it that surprising. Many players really like the challenge of unifying or civilising. And the US is up there also because there are many players from the US, and because there is also some challenge there in achieving "manifest destiny".

The UK is "hell" for the new player because it takes a lot to manage it and you really do need to understand the basic mechanics of the game to play it. You need to keep several balls up in the air all of the time.

I advise in the strongest possible terms "Play something else first". Find something smaller and simpler for the first game just to get the hang of things. The USA would be good for a second or third game and good experience to prepare for a UK game.

I think oxmonsta summed it up nicely, roleplay or teach the Chinese how to play cricket! :D

Switzerland, because it has an interesting situation: not very strong and in a fairly poor starting location on the map, but it can rise far if done right.

One thing I felt about 1.03c was that there was not many challenges like that. Most countries were either too easy, or else too hard or too tedious beyond what I'd feel like for a casual game.

My first two games were as Japan and then Spain. I still like go back to playing these nations. Other than that I've played as France several times.

I see the favourite is Prussia. I've never played as them. I'm no good at the military side of the game and unification sounds too complicated for a simpleton like me.

I played many games with Prussia, tried a game with USA bored to hell, gonna quit the game.. You only have Mexico otoh with Prussia you are surrounded and anything is possible :)

Prolly I'll never try UK, what's the point?

After scanning the thread I think I'm gonna try Ottomans[kinda wierd for me I haven't tried them yet lol but German Unification and stuff looked more appealing to me], Russia and then Japan..
