What makes up an IC? and how much?

If for example I'm the US do I trade for or away any of these items?

You might want to peek at the manual... Ah, don't bother, we know that nobody ever reads the manual...

IC is the game's abstraction of industrial capacity, i.e. the capacity of a nation to produce war materiel. In the game, the IC you have available is a function of the amount of factories which are situated in all your provinces, which is then altered by several modifiers like technological efficiency, minister traits, domestic policies, war/peace mode and many more. Just read the tooltip you get when hovering the mouse pointer over the IC figure at the top bar of the main screen. ;)

The USA in HoI2 has many factories compared to other nations, but to reduce its unit production abilities at the game start it suffers from severe "modifiers" which will be lifted gradually by events starting in 1938.

Sorry Guys with a move my family made a few months ago, I lost the manual.

I should of been more specific, I did need the formula:

1 IC = 2 energy + 1 Metals + 0.5 Rares; lost the formula.

I understand some nations want these items and the USA has some. But since I expect to go to war at some point, should I hoard these items until needed or pick and choose who trade with. In the latter case, any advice on deciding what a good trade is?

Avtually, as the USA, you will never have a recource problem...
If you want you could for example decide not to sell oil and rares to the axis (which they really need), although I don't know if t his really hampers there actions (plus, I haven't noticed any really difference with this, always win easily... )

I never sell war material to the Axis. Don't trust them not to shoot me with my own trade goods. lol

But it would be interesting to see a study on what the effect on trade does to the Axis war machine. hmmm, embargo anyone?

Embargo wouldn't work since Germany can easily trade with SU and Romania. Just deny Germany rares and watch their IC drop, although it would have to be done when they are at war with SU

Heck I trade everything I can with axis and never DOW Ger till after Barbarossa. This makes things harder and more fun [ I hate seeing Europe red when it should be grey or blue ]. For real fun trade Ger all of starting US navy plus all the help they need to defeat russia , maybe even cut off a chunk of Russia for yourself.
