There was a Game Informer preview about EU4 before it came out. I remember it comparing EU4 to 3 and mentioning how much easier to get into it was. They said that earlier games from Paradox were like trying to read a complex physics textbook for fun. That sounded like something I would do, so I grabbed EU3 and all its expansions, and got EU4 when it came out a year later, I think? May have been a shorter amount of time.

I thought EU:Rome was fine. A bit shallow and boring after a while, but fine. The Blobeucids were terrifying.

Played Svea Rike 1 & 2 as a kid... can't remember exactly how I learned of the connection between that series and EU, as I'm pretty sure only Svea Rike III had Paradox as developer. I remember looking at the box in a store and realising that it was the same developer, I thought it looked cool and ended up buying it bought it.

I've played, or at the very least dabbled in, nearly every major game franchise (and several smaller ones) of the last 15 years or so (edit: that was available on PC). I mention this only to put into perspective what EU is competing against when I say that the EU series has grown to become my favorite games of all time.

I really can't stand civ5 and other trash conquest simulators. EU4 gives the player plenty of chances to comeback and diplomacy is super-fun and will be even more fun with cossacks.

Steam spammed the crap out of the "EU4 - Now Available" banner for my account. Persistency pays off--I suppose--because I eventually searched YouTube and landed on Shen streaming the EU4 demo playing Portugal. He brought some clarity to a UI that was initially inscrutable to me (ugh, I hate bad UIs with such passion). After I waded through the demo and I was hooked.

The rest is (a)history.

And yes, the UI still pisses me off--but mainly when it lies to me.

Back in 2001, I was getting bored with age of empires, civilization 2, and command and conquer. Civ 2 was my favorite game and I liked the slower paced nature of it. I went online looking for a strategy game. I was looking through some old game site that has long since died (EB games I think?) when I saw a title called Europa Universalis. I called best buy to see if they had it, they didn't. I called every major retailer around Houston and none of them carried the game and I soon realized this game wasn't really being sold in the US. So I ordered it directly through the website and had it mailed (something I hated.... I was 14 I didn't want to wait a week for the game to get here, I wanted right then damnit so getting it at a store was always preferable.) I remember that week of waiting was very anxiety filled because I was so excited from how the game had looked on the screenshots and description. After it arrived, I realized it was the most complicated game I'd ever bought up to that point after my first gam getting slaughtered while playing as Spain and having no idea what I was doing. After I learned it enough to know the game, I fell in love and spent endless hours on EU. I've been a Paradox customer and perpetual forum lurker ever since.

I found EU2 in the game store around Christmastime 2001. It was fun but hard. I found and bought EU (the first) just to see what the first version was like, found it was harder and less fun. I put them away in a box. I didn't have very much time to actually play outside of holidays back then.

...Years go by...

Christmastime 2004 (the Christmas directly preceded my join date to this forum) I sort through my old games; I see EU2 and pull it out, can't play it very well. A short time later, I stumble on the forum and start playing more, the hints were invaluable.

...Been playing since...

I...

-played Vic for a bit, CK for a bit, Vic2 a bit
-couldn't get into EU:Rome, HoI2, or HoI3 at all
-played EU3 a lot, then CK2 a lot,
-still play EU4 a lot, it's pretty much the only game I put any hours into now.

HoI1 was the game that introduced me to Paradox (I've always got the radar out for quality WW2 strategy games), and after that I checked out EU and then the rest of their games (as they came out). EU3 was the first 'EU' that really got its hooks into me, and never looked back - it's a great series that just keeps getting better :).

I was looking for something similar to Civ. I saw EU4 on steam when it released. I watched the videos on steam and decided to give it a try. My first game I played one of the one province nations in Ireland. I had no idea what I was doing and didn't understand why I lost when Portugal and England showed up to stomp me after I dow'd England. So I quit and didn't play again until a buddy of mine bought EU4 as well. Our first game didn't go well....and I decided I hated EU4. But he wanted to try again....and now I'm 1450 hours into EU4. At least 1300 of those hours has been playing with my buddy. Now we can't imagine finding a game that can compete with EU4. We will go off and play something else....but always come back to EU4.

Found an EU3 box at a local Circuit City and bought it without having much clue on what it was like, but the box art looked nice. Got confused by interface as a teenager, raged after a few failed starts, raged at losing a battle with more troops, and threw the disk at the wall. Came back to it years later after reading the wiki, so I wasn't as confused this time and had fun. After that it was a natural jump to EU4.

Um civ 5 give more control to the player with about same AI but better progression of difficulty. I find that many many people will disagree with calling civ 5 trash it is a very good game and like every other strategy game it needs AI improvement but its purpose is different from the conquest oriented EUIV civ gives you options to play peacefully or aggressively while EUIV has diplomacy mechanics which will get you hooked.

I was hugely dissapointed with Rome 2 and Civ5 and was looking for a strategy game with more depth to it. I found Eu4 and got hooked this was the kind of game I had been wanting. Never did.play any of the older titles but I did play alot of Svea Rike back in the day.:)

It also made me pick up the other titles like Ck2 and Vic2 and now eagerly awaiting HoI4 and Stellaris.

For me, it started out with a trip to hospital, back in 2010. I had some pretty major abdominal surgery, and was stuck in bed for several weeks afterwards. At the time, I had a Windows desktop (which I gamed on) and a Mac laptop (which I didn't game on), but the laptop was all I could use from bed, so I had to find some Mac game pronto to keep me occupied and sane during my recovery. There were much slimmer pickings for Mac then than there are now, so I decided to give a try to some random game I'd never heard of called "Europa Universalis III" which was on sale on Steam. I figured that it probably wouldn't be something that would keep my attention long-term, but that it would probably keep me occupied for a few hours at least. I pretty much haven't stopped playing since.
