Friend of mine showed me that Empire of Sweden trailer and I liked a game played on a vast world map where you could play as anyone and conquer anything, so I gave it a try.
What made you start playing this game/series?

Got really charmed by first season of Game of Thrones, which lead me to CK2. After few hours of playing the GoT mod I got bored and almost dropped the game. Few days later I decided to give it one more try, and that I might as well just try playing unmodded, historical game. 500 hours of gameplay later, I bought EU3, V2, Darkest Hour, and the rest is history.
I don't really know how I got to CK2, but this was my first game. (Maybe a Review from GameStar?)
I liked CK2 alot, even more with CK2+, so I am happy many features got integrated.
I still think CK2 has the cooler game concept, but now I just have more fun with EU IV.
I didn't really watch the development from EU IV, I just took notice, that it was about two weeks before release and a demo was released. I tried the Demo and was hooked, it played so awesome, it had everything I missed so much for Civilisation and Total War.
I replayed Victoria 2 a bit, and love the concept of POPs, but can't get warm with Victoria 2 in a whole. I didn't really try any older titles, like HoI 3 or other prequels.
Now I am waiting for every Dev Diary for HoI 4, Stellaris, EU IV and CK2.

Played a lot of Civ5 but got fed up by the unholy turn times for giant maps and the fact that you either get rofl stomped in the first 50 turns or just dominate the AI for the rest of the game, even on the highest difficulties. Then I read an article about EU4 and how it is the final destination for strategy games. (As anything more complicated would be unplayable for most people.) The article sounded intriguing and the game was on a steam sale at that point, so I bought the collection edition.

I was incredibly bored one day and had a real itch to play something World War Two. So I picked up HoI3, really out of desperation. I initially recoiled at the interface but stuck with it and soon fell in love. So with my grand strategy introduction complete I branched out to other Paradox titles. First Crusader Kings 2, then Victoria 2 and now finally Europa Universalis 4. 
I was (and still am) a part of an alternate-history group on deviantart (go ahead, point and laugh), and some the pictures posted were from EU3, HOI3, and Vicky2. I decided to check them all out. Interestingly, EU3 was the one I wanted the least but grew to love the most, while HOI3 was the one I wanted the most but grew to like the 2nd least of the main 4.
Watching Quill18's first series of Europa Universalis IV is what caught my interest, since then I have bought pretty much all the grand strategy paradox games and will continue from now till the end of my days they are by far my favorite games. Just in case a dev happens to read this thread and this post I hope you guys realize just how valuable people like Quill18, Arumba, Northerlion and all the other YouTubers have been for Paradox. Without them its unlikely I would have picked up Europa or any other Paradox title but now I've bought them all plus most dlc and I'm sure I can't be the only one with this experience. Being able to see the game played by an independent fairly ordinary gamer and also learning how to play the game at the same time (something particularly important for paradox titles) was great.
I never experienced the older games, only the new ones. I guess I'm part of the new generation of paradox gamers.
I pirated ck2 a few days after its release (hopefully this isn't rule-breaking to admit). Bought the game the same day; sometimes you just know. I did and still do get wildly annoyed at a lot of the glaring overall design philosophy failings (IMO) and can't stick with it. I believe I pre-ordered EU4 or got it the day it came out; I had been staring down eu3 and never bought it cause the next one was coming... it's stayed my favorite title since its release. In fact its rather solidly my favorite game to play since release, and a top 5 all time favorite no question about it.
One day on steam i was browsing through the store and found eu4 on sale it kept being recommended to me, I kept telling myself that it didn't look interesting and moved on but every time i saw it for the next 1-2 days it made me want to look at videos about it and eventually I did and it looked interesting, so eventually I bought it and felt like i made a mistake and wasted money little did i know i'd be buying all their DLC. Downloaded it and jumped right in and played my first country ever: Brittany, Celtic Brittany. lol
here I am now with 2500 hrs into the game although I had always wished and still wish there was an easier way to make your own world and custom provinces with ease

Used to play a WW2 mod for Civ 4 (Road to War mod that came officially with the game). Was told about HoI2 by a friend after telling him about the mod for Civ. Check the game out and liked it but I found it complicated. After, I discovered Eu3 and started playing it. Then when CK2 came out I stopped playing Eu3. I also played Victoria 2 a while. Now CK2 kind of bores me and I am mostly about Eu4. Hopefully HoI4 will be good to play.
Civ5 was so dumb-ed down from Civ4 that I went looking for a new Grand Strategy game to play and found Victoria 2. Now I have a Paradox Entertainment problem costing hundreds of dollars a year... but I can quit any time I want... really.

There was a Game Informer preview about EU4 before it came out. I remember it comparing EU4 to 3 and mentioning how much easier to get into it was. They said that earlier games from Paradox were like trying to read a complex physics textbook for fun. That sounded like something I would do, so I grabbed EU3 and all its expansions, and got EU4 when it came out a year later, I think? May have been a shorter amount of time.
It was around 2005 I think, probably earlier since I was still playing Civ III at the time; and I think I read this review while looking for a new Strategy game to get into.
I just loved the idea of an Historical Simulator, and the Risk like boardgame look really resonated with me since I've been playing that type of boardgames since early childhood.
So yeah, I've been playing EU for about 10 years now, and I'm not stoping any time soon I think.

I borrowed a Europa Universalis 2 cd-rom from my local library. They only had maybe a hundred cd-rom games or so, I just randomly browsed them, and this looked like a promising strategy thing. Must have been around 2002/2003. I didn't like the UI and the visual style so I never really got into EU2, but I thought the theme and gameplay were promising and the title stuck in my mind. So years later I tried EU3, still didn't get into it. With EU3's second expansion In Nomine though, it had finally evolved enough to get me *completely* hooked and I never really dropped the series for long since 2008.
I most likely found EU II (or maybe even EU I) in the strategy section on some not at all legal sharing site. Then a bit later I was allowed some pocket money for games, and was able to start actually buying the games. Still do not own EU I and HOI I legally thou
I dated a girl who was really into HoI3 and EU3, though I never saw her playing either game. I had no idea what she was talking about when she would tell me about the games, I just assumed she really loved alternate history scenarios or something.
Then, the year we broke up, I was enthusing about my love of history and geography to a new friend of mine and he recommended that I check out EU3. It sounded familiar, so... yeah. Felt kind of silly that I didn't get into it earlier, but I'm sure I've learned my lesson.
