What made you start playing this game/series?

I'd like to hear how people got into playing Europa Universalis. For me, I was watching civ 5 videos when I suddenly saw one of shenryrr's videos. From then on, I've been hooked, even though my computer has a lot of trouble handling it's and especially the major mods like VeF and MEIOU. I don't care though, it's still the game I'll always come back to.

I bought EU I on a whim (it was heavily discounted in the store I went into) ... played it for a while and then I was hooked.

I loved CK2 (I think I had like 800-900 hours played at that point) and I thought EU would be in the same mould and maybe almost as good. It turned out that EU4 was even better (I think I have 1300 hours played in EU4 and like 1000 hours in CK2).

Not exactly sure what caused me to pick up EU3. I've always been a big fan of grand strategy games so I tried HOI 2 and started reading about EU3. Bought it to try it out and been into the series ever since.

Man, and I like to think I'm a veteran, even though I've only started with this version. Then again, I think I was only 1 or 2 when the first game came out so I don't think I would've understood it too well

My cousin showed me EU1 a bit after i bought age of empires 2 + the conquerors, and showed him that game. Basically we shared 2 of the most important strategy titles of that decade, he got hooked on AoE (and still plays it till today, it's the most played title on his Steam account), and me on EU. I immediately bought Europa universalis 2 (which was already out when he showed me eu1) and from that it's history. Thousands of hours played as byzantines trying to survive against ottos, infinite CTDs because i was using the italian localization which was kinda written with feet, weird battle outcomes... nothing of those stopped me from enjoying that unique game. Thanks to the bugs i discovered the Forums, and also an unofficial italian community about pdx grand strategy titles, which is still alive since i joined it in the first years of 2000s, and thanks to Forums i discovered Mods which multiplicated the longevity of every EU iteration.
There simply isn't a game like EU!

Saw the ryukyu 3 mountains by DDRJake on eu3...got hooked. Had EU4 from release and played since.

I'm a HoI player, I had no interest on Europa Universalis, just waiting on HoI IV, but then damn Steam showed me EUIV on sale, the collection was on 75-80% discount and I just couldn't pass it. Now I'm stuck here.

I read a review of EU 1 not a long time after its release and I knew it was the game I had been waiting for for many years. Main reasons: real time with active pause was much better than both turns and real time like in RTS games, great start date and game's period (no country was really powerful at the game's start date and it was just before real expansion started. That's the reason I like EU much more than Victoria or HoI, where you start as already expanded, huge country) , complexity, possibility to play an alternative history.

Saw an ad for EU1 in Military History Magazine. I then and went and found it at a store. Bought it and have been playing Paradox Titles since then. I loved the fact you could "change" History.

I found EU4 by accident while trying to find a city-state/nation management simulator that would allow me to direct the focus of my cities to various degrees and ibteract/expand into the world. Something like Civ5, with real time play, and an overlay of a light version of Sim City.

I found EU4 instead and never continued my search.

HoI1 did. My father's friend gave me HoI1 back in 2004 and I loved it. Later I learned about other Paradox series and it all snowballed downhill from there (pun kind of intended).

Good friend of mine was a huge HOI3 fan, suggested I look into Paradox. I found HOI3 too confusing, so I tried EU3 and have been a Paradox enthusiast ever since.
