I don't know whats with people today and not using their brains to keep track of what they need to keep track of. It does not take much effort to figure out where things are or what you need to do or plan to do. You just don't need to use spreadsheets for things like this. ... ... Maybe I spent too long playing old games like age of empires 2 and similar - without spreadsheets or things like second monitors where you had to think of what you're doing in real time with no ability to pause.

Aside from the fact that I'm more in the roleplayer camp, I have to admit I can't even imagine a useful way to use spreadsheets in Stellaris. I mean, most of the game's math is based on simple addition and subtraction, with the occasional multiplier. If I want to know where to build a Power Hub, I just look at the total energy production.

And for keeping track of things - if you really want to do that, there's Notepad or OneNote for that. Why use Excel? Do people really find that easier?

Every piece of useful information I need is recorded in the game already. Why would duplicating it on a spreadsheet make this info more accessible?

Click Planet, check output status on Tab 1. Check Pop Happiness. low happiness, mouse over Bar, see what the issue is. Fix if applicable. etc. etc. etc. ;)

The interface contains everything I need to play the game. There are just too many dependent variables that are based on the pseudorandom nature of the game's galaxy, technology, and race mechanics to properly model. Ultimately, the game is its own best simulator for this reason.

I sometimes use them to decide if fitting a new technology on my ships is cost-effective. Or when I'm playing with New Ship Types and More they have a bunch of different ships of each type (Cruisers, Strike Cruisers, and Battlecruisers for example) with varying cost modifiers so I need to calculate which I should build since they all mostly do the same thing.

Ahh spreadsheets. What a modern marvel. Back in the EU2 days I used to muck about with a dozen different sets of notes.

As to why - mostly to record info for AAR writing. If I am not writing an AAR on the game, no notes/spreadsheets. What information I record differs depending on the AAR.

I don't feel the need to use spreadsheets in a game like Stellaris. If I know I will forget something I usually just scribble it down on the piece of paper I have next to my computer
