What kind of PC do I need to run Stellaris smoothly?

Hi all,
I am thinking of upgrading my PC and I'd appreciate some advice.
Currently, I have Intel Core i5 6600K (4 cores, 3.5 GHz), 8GB RAM (DDR4), NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060, and no SSD. Not counting pause time and playing at maximum speed with low graphics settings, no bloom, one year takes about 1 minute 30 seconds at the start of the game and about twice as much in 2400 (without crisis and wars) if I play in Medium-sized galaxy (default number of civilizations, Ironman on). When crisis comes the game slows down and begins to stutter, and that's on medium galaxy map. I've never hit crisis while playing on the bigger maps simply because the game becomes too slow later on (I don't have the exact benchmarks, but it's about 1 day per second).
So, my questions are:
1) What maximum speed do you guys have in large/huge galaxies in the mid/late game? Maybe 1 second per day is the norm and my PC is fine, it's my patience I need to work on
2) Are there any not so obvious lifehacks which improve the game's performance? Like, maybe an SSD really speeds it up, or maybe it's optimised for AMD (like EU4 is optimised for Intel), or having more than 8 GB RAM makes a huge difference, or switching off some graphics/gameplay setting really speeds it up, something like that.
3) What PC setup do you have and would you recommend it?
Thanks a lot in advance!

The current norm is that the game has some serious performance bugs which Paradox are investigating.

Ask again in a couple of weeks ;)

I can tell you up front that:
  • An SSD will only improve two things: the time taken for startup, and the time taken to save. Games built on the Clausewitz engine preload their assets.
  • Upgrading past 8GB of RAM is unlikely to have any benefits for Stellaris, because AFAIK it still runs in 32-bit mode even on a 64-bit OS.
