The time period was not particularly different from 1444, so it's not a problem of immersion: but of characters. 1399 had Byzantium on its knees, but the Ottomans starting nervously at the Timurids; the Hundred Years War still raging full-strength; a big, menacing Golden Horde; the HRE interregnum still going, with Bohemia holding the crown but Bavaria contesting it; and of course my one true love, Gian Galeazzo Visconti, rampaging around Northern Italy and giving a credible go at the unification of Langobardia Major.
