So far it's good. My weirdest moment so far was when playing as Germany (NHF), and I sent volunteers to Ethiopia, and for a time it looked like a better defense was being mounted than pre-BBA (though really the AI probably won't do what it takes to survive long enough). Things got awkward when Italy's puppet Ethiopia emerged and I apparently switched sides in the conflict - in Spain your boys get sent home first when something like that happens...

Can you elaborate on why you believe this?

I am on the fence about this DLC. Do you believe what it adds does not detract from the game?

I bought NSB on preorder. For this one, I am thinking of waiting a few months until it gets colder and enjoying what's left of summer.

I'm concerned that the air rework is just "more clicks." kind of like how MTG is basically "more clicks."

I feel like they didn't do enough to change how the AI plays to make it worth while. If the AI is still going to reshuffle troops and thinks an offensive is three tank divisions...

I tried the patch and saw all my air wing sizes ruined :(

I like it, but it's not polished at all. A lot of bugs and stuff not balanced. Still enjoyable, I just wish Paradox would play their DLC before releasing them.

I've only played historical Italy so far, but I've had a great time. I think the Italian focus tree is great, there are so many options but you can do only so much, so there is choice in what direction you take Italy. I like the Mussolini mission system a lot too.

Changes and additional features feel like they're mostly for the better. Some very on-point ones are there.

I don't feel it's as radical a change in general like No Step Back was, though.

Also, it's painful to look at the Officers (Divisional Commanders) tab. Portraits please, man. :(

Replacing working system with another bunch of pointless micromanagement hell.
Complexity and customization fof the sake of complexity and customization, abandoning gameplay value in the process.
In other words, cashgrab.

I like it. Designers are fun. Looking forward to certain mod updates that use the new designer.

Got beaten by Ethiopia as Italy because I forgot to pause the game when messing with the designer. Gave the 1 division that managed to escape a decoration for their trouble. A stunning and glorious success for the Kingdom! Viva Il Duce!

Okay mostly SP player here, I don't care about the MP in this game it to me is a "for fun" MP because if we start making the game balanced and fair that ruins the point of playing the historical setting and so on.

As for BBA

I like the new quasi trophy stuff

Navy feels like they wander around more looking for each other than a few quick decisive battles off bat.

For those of us who didn't want to build just one or two kinds of planes I truly hate this Plane designer for a few reasons:

1. Auto naming of the Planes is gone unlike the Tank and Ship designer. So now instead of "Sherman" or "Panzer IV" I get Improved Small Aircraft frame. What happened to my P-40, BF-109, etc? I know I can rename them as I like but I preferred not having to do it all because with tank designer reality is I am only doing that maybe 4 times the entire game. Plane designer if you actually try to build an proper not janky MP CAS only kind of airforce it gets old fast.

2. Limit the damn guns better, it's kind of like when tank designer allows you to have multiple stabilizers how does a fighter have THAT many guns? Since when does a Mustang have as many guns as a B-17?

3. My god naval planes are damn good again, without even trying you can knock out carriers left and right

4. Making an Air wing, meh. I feel some of those features are for static countries like the USSR but when you're moving around a lot like the US I'm not trying to set up a giant air wing, especially since they are slaved to airbases it doesn't work the same as say troops or ships all being under a Field Marshal or Admiral.

5. Do love the transport plane only needs one factory now

6. Why are the heavy fighter sprites under the small frame but the heavy fighter symbols under medium? So If I say make a P-38 technically per game rules I need to make a it from a medium frame but to actually see it fly in the air that's under a small airframe, pick one or the other please. How many 6 engine planes were even in common use for the war? Just weird concepts, at least in Tank designer the weird stuff like the P-E engine stayed weird "oh that's neat history but i'm not doing that" where as here it's just ram a lot of engine or guns on a place. Airpower in HOI is more about mass vs design even previously but right now as it stands we're be making this just wildly unrealistic 6 engine planes with more guns than a B-17 that's somehow a fighter.

7. Just throwing it out there but because there's no real way to boost agility anymore and reliability, from what I can tell, still isn't all that important you've pretty much make it all about one plane designer to choose from unless you are really trying to encourage stacking strat bombing.

I get that HOI4 has it's alt history and humor, I like it, but if we're going to make supply and logistics much less try to detail ever minor bill that ever passed across the desk of the WW2 belligerent powers can we get some realism in our plane designer?

Plus one kicker about plane designer, kind of like tank designer, is it's a pain in the ass to get experience pre-war depending on the nation. So Britain and US are kind of playing one foot in the bucket until they can get involved because the trees only give so much experience which even if say I only built bare minimum plane designs if you have a carrier fleet you need: fighter, carrier fighter, naval bomber, cas/bomber. That's a lot to design when training only gives you so much XP to play with.

It's up there with other than germany who really gets to play around with tank designer constantly until the war is on?

Sorry guys it's all P-36 and Bolos because reasons until the war starts.

Not digging the new Peace Conference, I like the ideas in it but as usual it's not intuitive, why do I need to select every region to change someone's government? Much less why would I ever want to just change governments of some areas but not the whole country?

Had some real issues with the AI being unable to leave territory it's not allowed in after a peace conference, it just stays there and can't find a way out even manually leading it.

why? balance is balance, you would expect the AI historical faction to win about 50/50 if the game is balanced so that players do the same (maybe slightly in favor of the Axis because they have to naval invade less and cover fewer colonies but still)

No, it's actually incredibly easy to get air xp now; just get a chief of airforce and you'll be drowning in it. And at only 1 or 2 xp per piece, designing aircrafts is dirt cheap too.

Yeah did that, again play the game properly not just gimmick 3 or 4 planes. And no I was not drowning in it even with Hap Arnold.

Actually build:

Fighter, Carrier figher, CAS, Carrier CAS, Naval bomber, Carrier Naval bomber, Tac, Heavy, Strat, and Scout each time: not so easy as it was before

As it stands now you may as well go the MP route and just build a few designs and say to hell with any sort of realism.

After few hours I have ambivalent feelings, but probably this is my fault - I have very tough week, I was tired and my braincells moved away, so this, what I'm writing, is not binding. Probably I have to withhold my opinion to friday, maybe sunday, when I will be less distracted. But:
1. I wanted to try Brazil for the achievement. Probably I didn't understand everything, but:
- there's a lot of thing to research, if You want to build some airforce. For country like Brazil, which has two research slots, it means delay with industrial or military stuffs;
- I cannot figure out, how to build CAS - every I tried, was discribing as fighters. I cannot see some hints: "research these, if You want CAS", but maybe I was blind. I watched today some video from FBG and I think, that I know, when I made mistakes.

2. So I leave the game and started as German Reich, because I wanted to figure out, how peace deal mechanic works. And I think I still don't know :)
- I didn't like, how war score worked in previous version, but for now I don't like too :) I conquered France, Netherlands, Denmark, UK and some other stuffs... and I had pretty mutch the same war scores as Italy, which stuck in Yugoslavia;
- If new peace deal should avoid bordergore, something went wrong. After war with USSR, my puppeted Hungary took some stuffs in the middle of Grand Steps, Spain took ex-lithuanian provinces, New Indonesian Order, which I didn't know that even existed, puppeted Orda, but in few separate states. This is not just my issue - I have seen in some videos tons of Russias, few Australias, etc. Thank God, that the game is faster now, because apart from the aesthetic impressions, lacking in the late game may be awful.
- Does passing give You war score? Maybe I missed something, but I think, that not. As Brazil I have stolen ships from Argentina, I took some states... and I have not enough war score to take rest of Argentina. Maybe I was wrong and I should take all states and then put my hands on the ships.
- Does taking coastal provinces avoid fascist nations from taking something in the middle? I have suspicious, that not anymore. Hungary is a good example, Italy took some states in France from me as well, even if I took everything, which border with them and with coastline.
- If I defeated Netherlands - can I puppet Dutch East Indies, or this is not an option anymore? If that, I will be very sad, becauce this was my favourite cheesy strategy for almost infinite manpower (and not just mine ;) ). In my game I have seen democratic Indonesian Republic and fascist New Indonesian Order, which were an independent countries.

But - do not take these feelings entirely seriously. As I said, I was very tired and distracted. Probably I should have to choose something simplier or don't invite anyone to my faction. It is possible as well, that old cheesy tactics will not working anymore - that is not a big issue, just requiring a new approach.

In other hand, there is a few things I like right now:
- officers - I thought, that it will be very hard to gain XP, but giving them medals is very helpful. My best division commander thanks that is in the half way to take 5 lvl. I think I found way to take "By merit alone" achievement :) And here I have question, maybe someone had checked it already: what if I disband unit with my best commander, for example by accident? He goes back to the pool or disappears?
- taking fleet from my enemies - that's cool, I don't have to puppet UK in the very cheap state and annex them;
- now it is simplier to get a huge army XP. 0,3 per day from one advisor is mutch better then 0,05 from few advisors. Thanks that I can take 2,3 land doctrines before I go to war.

As You see, I haven't played new countries yet. I will test it in Friday or Sunday, so maybe I can tell something more :)

In this weekend I had more time to playing and testing, so this is more comprehensive opinion:)
About content:
1. Etiopia - before BBA defending against Italy was not so hard, now this is easy mode. Few of focuses are really OP (for example - balkanization Your country and then integrating). Haile Sellassie has really cool title :) But one minus - some of the focuses, especially from industrial branch, should be 35 days long in my opinion. You have to do a lot of things with Your country; maybe I was wrong, but for the third research slot I found time in 1941.
2. Italy - pre-BBA Italy was really OP, even with basic focus tree, now it is OP even more - You can eat Balkans thanks free wargoals in 1938 without allies intervention. One mention - I totally forgot about balance of power, so I lost Mussolini just after loosing Etiopia. I haven't played most memic path yet, but I want to try it in this week.
3. Switzerland - probably the most complicated focus tree in this DLC with unique mechanics. It took me several attemps, but I figure out, how to prevent Anschluss and take italian Alpen from focuses, create a really powerful Neutral Entente plus change ideology on fascist and have regular troops, not a militias in one playtrough. That shennanigans took a few years (I was not ready for anything until 1941) but after that I was powerful enough to take Axis (with some help, of course).

About new mechanics:
1. Peace deals - I'm starting to appreciate new peace deals mechanic. Thanks that I prevented Japan from taking Hawaii, when I tried to do "Pizza time" achievement. I don't want to say, that I undestand everything, but I gave it second chance.
2. Division commander - I was excited about it for 5 minutes :)
3. Plane designer - I have not tried it yet, so it is hard to say something more.
4. Balance of power - this is ok-ish, but I have suspicious, that it will be this same as other mechanics dedicated for DLC (for example like managing factions from BftB) - will not be repeated in the next DLC's.

//ed, as usual.

First off, I believe Paradox should have kept this DLC seperate from all the rebalancing and reworks they also put in this update. I have the feeling I'm learning a new ame here that is also quite unbalanced and buggy at the same time. All the rebalancing and rework distracted me for a few days from what really mattered: the DLC content.

On the plus side:
* peacedeals are an improvement. Yes, it needs tweaking but I'm sure PDX will get that done. As for the tweaking: see below. What I like about peacedeals is the blind negotiation, the overbidding on stuff you really want and the various options you get.
* air designer. This too needs some tweaking, but I like how you can go between cheap ass barebone fighter and top of the line safe as can be king of the skies. Haven't fully gotten the hang of the air wings yet, but my guess is I'll easily be able to make one or two elite airwings that I can use for my primary fronts and use the cheap planes for interception defense everywhere else.
* focus trees. There's tons of replayability and value here. Great work, looks good, feels good. A bit OP here and there, but that again is tweaking.
* Commander system: yesterday I did the 'merit' achievement and got a guy up from the ranks to level9. Quite a grind, but in conclusion I like the way you get to choose your new general instead of random rolling a portrait. The medals seem expensive, especially when PP is not your countries strong suit, but I like the look of this system.
* new puppet names! Since this game is largely about conquests, and you need puppets to avoid the garrison costs, I love the 'italian protectorate x' names instead of just using the old countries name. Gives a sense of actually having conquered the place when you look at the map.

There's more, like map improvements and reworks and art etc. This is all up to the high standard we've come to expect.

On the minus side:
* peacedeals need a lot of tweaking. AI behavior + how warscore works + how puppeting works now results in horrific borders. Yesterday I had a very long peacedeal after beating the soviets where germany and me were constantly contesting each other. In the end I just gave up and decided to take out Germany for the territories. The peacedeal resultated in a patchwork of italian russia, german russia, german annexed territory and even a piece of soviet union that was left. Another thing: conquering anyone in a one on one war often leaves you with not enough points to take everything. Passing does not get you extra points.
* warscore: occupation should count much much heavier. Two examples: as kaiser germany I took out italy with a little support of the brits. I crossed the alps, ground my way through italy and capped them. Did all the work. Oh yeah, britain sunk some ships and dropped some bombs, so they got more warscore. Other example: the above mentioned soviet war where germany was on the defensive and I conquered the soviet union and several of their allies. But germany still had loads more warscore. They literally did not own a single russian tile.
* planes designer. needs more intuitive clicking. ALso needs to add historic planes for us role players. other people have written up this part better.
* focus trees: not this DLC but all the old ones need their plane bonuses reworked ;-)
* the rebalancing that has been going on has negatively impacted playing minor nations. In the past (last week) I was able to surprise the Brits with a fleet of small subs from spain and naval invade. There should be the possibility for minor nations to launch naval invasions while not needing as big a fleet as the royal navy. But I will admit that is quite a puzzle.

All in all: good work so far, and I see patches and fixes almost daily. I'm quite positive :)

If they made the game so minor countries are now actually minor countries, I might actually want to play the game again. However, I will wait to see bugs get addressed for a bit.
